It is a human right. This means everyone is entitled to it. MIGRANT The movement of a person or people from one country, locality, place of residence, etc., to settle in another It is a normal human activity. Human beings have always moved from 'one country, locality, place of residence to settle in another'. ASYLUM SEEKER They are ordinary people facing extraordinary conditions. They have experienced war, persecution, discrimination, racism and oppression. They've been forced to flee from their homeland because of nothing more than their ethnicity, religion or beliefs. Who is a refugee? U.N. definition (1951 Convention): A refugee is a person who “owing to a well– founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country” POLITICAL REFUGEE Characteristics of a Refugee ◦ Takes only what they can carry ◦ Initial journey is on foot or by other primitive form of transportation ◦ Lacks documentation ◦ Has no clear destination ◦ Hopes to return home someday ◦ Is a part of an unstratified group Why do you think these characteristics are common among ALL refugees? How can we help refugees? • While there are many way we can help refugees, for example in NZ becoming a volunteer • • • • • • • • refugee supporter is one of the most famous ways to support refugees. There are many other practical ways we can help them. 1. Host refugees and asylum seekers in your home. Not applicable to everyone, but if you can why not in the time of need? 2. Volunteer your specific skill. As a teacher I can help refugees in my class to make them feel like home --- you can too. 3. Help refugees to integrate into a new culture. The change might be overwhelming for them, but with support they can get used to it. 4. Encourage your university to offer refugee scholarships. In New Zealand there are several universities who are already doing this. 5. Employ refugees. Most of them would love to have the opportunities taken away from them in their home countries 6. Offer opportunities for refugees to volunteer. In some places refugees might not be allowed to work etc. but offering them a volunteer position will help them feel like they are part of the community. 7. Hold awareness and fundraising events. You can do this wherever you are, in your communities, schools or workplace. Run a half marathon, do a sponsored swim, put on a raffle or a yard sale. 8. Donate. The easiest way you can support a refugee is through donations, it does not always have to be money.. What are some other ways you can donate to a refugee? How can we help refugees at MC? Mangere College is zoned for Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre where a number of refugees arrive until they are resettled by the government. This means our college is lucky to host a number of Refugee students from different parts of the world While their might be many ways we can offer to help refugees, the start point for everyone should be embracing refugees, understanding their hardships, struggles and acknowledging the sacrifices they have to make in order to be in a safer place and to have an equal right for life opportunities. You can help a refugee at MC by doing above and by making them feel like Mangere College is our big Whanau which they are part of. Why should we all help refugees?
