Ancient Egypt
How Ancient Egypt Influenced our lives today?
Paper
Writing
What plant did the Egyptians make paper out of?
What are the symbols called that the Egyptians used to
write?
The plant that the Egyptians use to make paper is the
papyrus plant, most commonly known by its botanical
name Cyperus papyrus.
Where did they find this plant?
Papyrus thickets were found in the marshes of the
Nile Delta as well as in the low-lying areas bordering
the Nile Valley, both of which needed shallow fresh
water or water-saturated earth to flourish.
How did they make paper?
The papyrus plant has been grown for a very longtime
in Egypt’s Nile Delta region, It was harvested for its
stalk or stem, whose core pith was divided into tiny
strips, pressed together, and dried to create a smooth,
thin writing surface.
How is paper similar today?
The word “papyrus”, which refers to the plant that
the Ancient Egyptians processed to make writing
surfaces, is the origin of the word paper. Papyrus
though, isn’t actually made of paper. Papyrus plant
stems were used by the Egyptians to make scrolls
and sheets by cutting them into thin strips and
pasting them together.
The ancient Egyptians used the distinctive script known
today as Hieroglyphs (Greek for “sacred words”)
In what direction do you read hieroglyphics?
Hieroglyphs are always read from top to bottom but
sometimes on the left (like English) and sometimes on
right.
What is the Rosetta Stone and when was it found?
The Rosetta stone, a dark-colored granodiorite stela
inscribed with the same inscription in three scriptsDemotic, Hieroglyphs, and Greek-means different things to
different individuals. During Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt
in July 1799, French soldiers discovered the stone in the
city of Rosetta (modern-day el Rashid).
What does the Rosetta Stone tell us?
Rosetta stone actually deals with a fairly banal piece of
administrative business. A profound wisdom reaching
across the centuries. It is a copy of a decree passed in 196
BCE by a council of Egyptian priests celebrating the
anniversary of the coronation of Ptolemy V Epiphanes as
king of Egypt.
Rope and Pulley System: The Egyptians used a Rope and Pulley System to lift blocks of stone when building the pyramids.
Explain how they did this.
It is proposed that Old Kingdom Egyptians did likely create and utilize a simple but robust, durable pulley (made of
limestone, granite, and/or copper) fully capable of thousands of usage cycles- a polished cylinder rotates in an open
sleeve or cradle with a polished, mating surface. The portion of the cylinder in control with the rope would ne groove
and/or roughened sufficient to prevent rope slippage.
