Soft Lighting
One technique used to create soft lighting is "higher key lighting". This is when
the key light is heightened and a bunch of fill lights are used
Removes all shadows
Hard Lighting
One technique used to create hard lighting is "low key lighting". This is when the
key light is lowered and fill lights aren't used
Creates shadows for dramatic effect. You will see this effect often in noir films
Practical/Motivated Lighting
Using props that would typically contain light to enhance the lightning
Or pretending like the light effect is coming from a prop, even though it was
manipulated. Light on screen has possible "real world" motivation to be there.
