M al al a You s af z ai Activis t for Edu cation Malala Yousafzai is known as a powerful and inspiring activist for education and gender equality. She travels the world sharing speeches and ideas that inspire people to stand up for what they believe in, be determined and treat everyone equally. Malala is from Pakistan, a country in Asia. She loved school as a child and was a great student. When she was young, a group of bad people called the Taliban invaded Malala’s country. They spread bad messages and changed the laws so that people were no longer allowed to do the things they enjoyed. They hurt anyone who did not follow their new laws. One of the new laws said that girls were not allowed to go to school. Malala was angry and confused. Instead of following the Taliban’s laws, she stood up for herself and her other female classmates, even though it was very dangerous. Malala wrote a blog on a public news site that told the world about life under the Taliban. She spoke on TV about how her life has changed, and how it wasn’t fair that girls weren’t allowed the same education as boys. She knew it was dangerous, but she spoke out anyway. As a punishment, some men from the Taliban shot Malala on her way home from school. Luckily, Malala survived. Instead of being silenced, Malala continued to speak out against the Taliban and their unfair rules. Many people think that she is brave for still using her voice to stand up for her right to an education. She has made many girls in Pakistan feel comfortable going to school and inspired others to use their voices for change. Malala Yousafzai fought for girls in her country to be able to go to school. This connects to SDG 5, Gender Equality. Malala believes that all children, girls and boys, deserve equal and good education.
