Honors English 4/Peters While the genre of fiction awards us the special opportunity of experiences of the lives of characters outside of our everyday lives, the non-fiction genre brings us to the same stunning place on the coattails of reality. The themes of fiction are powerful, but the awareness of the issues that plague our daily realities shines forth in an entirely different way through non-fiction. The people, the conflicts, the words—they are real. Essential Questions To Consider With Your Partner: How do society's values conflict with Malala's moral conscience throughout her reflection? How do people stand up for their beliefs? What importance does literacy hold in society? What are some serious women's rights issues in Pakistan and around the world? How do you explain Malala’s attack in the context of Pakistan’s history? What progress has been made in terms of women's rights in Pakistan? The final product of this unit will be a 50 – point awareness project/presentation developed by you and your partner. In order to complete this project, you will first need to decide what the central issue from I Am Malala you feel should be brought to the attention of others. Once that issue is decided, you should follow the steps to develop an effective awareness project: 1) Decide on a Target Population: A decision should be made on what segments of the general public should be targeted. For instance, is this for high school students aged 14-18, men and women between 25 and 49, young men between 18 and 25…? 2) Develop a Message: What specific message do you want to convey to your target audience in regards to the issue selected from your book? This should be a specific and attention-grabbing statement that will be the reoccurring theme of your entire project. 3) Research, Interview, Survey, and Get Feedback: This is the information gathering and creation of your project. Be certain to use MLA format when citing sources, including interviews from teachers and students. You should include at least three secondary sources in addition to Malala’s memoir, which serves as your primary source. 4) Develop a Presentation Plan: The overall presentation method, tone and theme of your presentation should be developed. This will entail creating a 4-6 minute long visual presentation. 5) Create, Revise and Finalize the Project: You will have class days to work on your project. 6) Present to classmates.
