Sheldon is a bad listener
An analysis paper
Based on the video, Sheldon, the bad listener, is a genius but not an active listener. He
seems self-centered and only says what he wants to Leonard even though he can understand it.
He also centers his problems first despite knowing his friend needs company. On the other hand,
Leonard seems like the opposite of Sheldon; he seems considerate, especially to his friend's
problems, and reflects genuinely into them. He is open to prioritizing Sheldon's issues so that they
can have a more disclosed conversation. I also observed that Sheldon is more of a logical person,
while Leonard is more of an emotional person.
This is why, the video shows a conflict between Sheldon and Leonard. The main issue in
the video is Sheldon's ignorance and rudeness towards facing Leonard's problem. Sheldon lacks
comprehension regarding how he will address a situation adequately. He has shown a lack of
sincerity in expressing his advice to Leonard, then constantly tapping the clock on the table to
interrupt him from talking. This behavior loosened Leonard's patience, and then he walked out
due to constant insults from Sheldon.
Thus, I have recommendations to address this kind of problem. Regarding Sheldon's
behavior and thinking, I recommend learning about active listening and having a proper
communication style. Regarding active listening, Sheldon should first divide his attention between
his friends and himself because, based on the video, he is incapable of providing reflective
feedback on the problems shared by Leonard. That is why he must set aside his problems first,
give the speaker attention, and acknowledge their message. Sheldon must also learn how to
encourage the speaker to talk more so that the speaker would not feel that they are not expressing
too much to him. He can provide relevant questions, reflect, and seek clarification. Furthermore,
Sheldon must also respect the opinions stated by the speaker and avoid interruptions so that
Sheldon will know the message and avoid making assumptions. Moving to attain a proper
communication style, I am sure Sheldon is aware of verbal and non-verbal communication, so I
will not recommend educating himself. However, I want him to realize the emotions needed and
how he will sincerely convey his message to people. Providing transparency, for instance, if
Sheldon can apply assertive communication in delivering his messages, Leonard will feel the
connection coming from the advice made by Sheldon. It could strengthen the trust in their
friendship and have a broader understanding of each other.
