CEN 422 ENZYME ENGINEERING HOMEWORK 1 1) What is biotechnology ? What is the role of enzymes in white biotechnology? Biotechnology is method used to obtain a new organism by using part or all of an existing animal, plant or microorganism. It is also used to bring about a change in the genetic structure of an existing microorganism, plant or animal. White biotechnology is the design and use of organisms to produce a variety of beneficial chemicals or to destroy harmful and polluting chemicals through various enzymes. White biotechnology's duties include, for instance, producing alcohol, vitamins, amino acids, antibiotics, or enzymes, as well as preserving the environment and natural resources. The primary key tools of white technology are biocatalysts. Biocatalysts are widely used in various chemical and agri-food industries. Some application parts of White Biotechnology: Energy production from renewable biomass, role of metals in recovery, wate treatment, production of different types of metabolites, biocontrol agent production. Enzymes are biological catalysts that can be produced by living things, mostly in protein structure. They are responsible for measuring reaction rates inside the cell. They can maintain their activity outside the cell. Enzymes in white biotechnology: Enzyme usage reduces expenses connected with manufacturing and resource consumption (water, energy, fuels), while also enhancing the quality of the finished textile product. Enzyme use replaces damaging chemical treatments with less toxic and environmentally destructive enzymatic treatments. 2) Enzyme companies in the World and their products in the market? a) DuPont Danisco: The Danish company DuPont Danisco is referred to as "innovative solvers." In addition to food enzymes, its vast product line also includes soy proteins, probiotics, emulsifiers, dairy cultures, antioxidants, and dietary fibers. Among the other important products offered by DuPont are enzymes for the processing of dairy, bread, seafood, oils, and fats. b) Amway: Amway, a well-known brand in the consumer goods sector, is a hub for innovation in the fields of skincare, cosmetics, and home goods. Under the brand names eSpring, ARTISTRY, Nutrilite, XS, Ribbon Shop, and Legacy of Clean, the corporation sells digestive enzymes in retail stores. c) DSM: Among of DSM's key product lines include the brewers Clarex, Maxilact, and BakeZyme. Brewers Clarex assisted in ending the pricey cold stabilization procedure, but Maxilact is used to dissolve the lactose component and make lactose-free dairy products possible. By delaying crumb staling during storage, BakeZyme, on the other hand, is used to keep bread soft and fresh for a long time. Meryem Furuncu 18290555
