People are becoming more and more dependent on search engines to get the answer for their everyday queries. Everybody is seeking for answers, no one is staying behind. Today, all people are so busy searching for all the demands on their minds and expressing what they think and feel as they engage in a never-ending clicking and constant posting on social media. Chances are unstoppable, possibilities are unpredictable, influences are unlimited – a true embodiment on how the world works in this modern era. Internet is the most powerful technology of the virtual times which helps people not only in their daily lives but also in professional aspects. Simply called “the Net”, Internet is a worldwide system of computer networks that transmits data via various types of media. It was highly used all over the world and later introduced in some countries, including the Philippines. Magpantay et al. (2002) further described the Philippine Network Foundation (PHNET) achieved the nation’s first public permanent connection to the internet, via a 64 kbit/s link to Sprint in the United States on 29 March 1994. Such breakthrough moment has opened the doors for progress on the Filipinos having an access of wide information. As the “net” continuously prospers, it plays a very vital role in education being widely used to gather information and add knowledge of various subjects. Popular search engines in the internet include Google, Yahoo and Bing which offer an easy and instant reach to a vast amount of data in just a few seconds making them the topmost choice of people especially around the world. For example, most Filipino students use Google for research purposes and for relearning the topics taught in school. Some prefer to visit sites according to their needs and interests. There are websites that are used for communication like Facebook, Messenger and even Viber 10 app. Others are for online entertainment like Youtube, mobile gaming, etc. While Instagram, also a popular website, is utilized for uploading photos. Moreover, search engines are generally accepted because of the many advantages it provides to online users. Some of these are the ease of usability, affordability and accessibility. With its wide range of information, it keeps people updated with current issues and it can also be used to download e-resources that support both teacher and students’ interaction in educational setting. However, not all people especially those living in remote areas have access to the internet and can afford to buy gadgets like laptop, mobile phones and tablets. Internet can also be dangerous if not properly utilized. Cyberbullying which commonly happens online ruins a person’s identity, reputation and even life. There are also websites that show pornographic and violent images which sometimes appear as online advertisements. Or worse, Internet can also cause addiction to people, engage them in unnecessary use of time and distract them from accomplishing more important activities. Here are the copies of the article so you can start reading. Are my instructions clear, class? Class: Yes, Mrs. Benitez! IRAYA’S PRIDE Melissa M. Carandang If you have visited Mangyan Village in Talipanan, Puerto Galera, you may have once encountered “Sir Pino”, a young educator who is considered by many as the pride of Iraya Mangyan Tribe. Pino Silaan Aranzado always thought to himself that he wanted to become a teacher. Born in an indigenous community where education is romanticized skeptically, he dreamt to become the person who will bring hope for a good future to his fellow tribesmen especially, to his Iraya roots. According to the Mangyan Heritage Center, Iraya Mangyans live in the municipalities of Baco, San Teodoro, and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro but most are in Occidental Mindoro, particularly in the municipalities of Abra de Ilog, Paluan and Mamburao. 18 Sir Pino grew up in the mountainous part of the municipality of Puerto Galera. Being the eldest among his four siblings, he never had an easy life and it also served as an inspiration for him to work hard for his dreams. From planting root crops in the mountain, selling nito-woven baskets barefooted along the stretch of white sandy shores of the famous White Beach and touring foreigners in the different tourist spots in Puerto Galera, he is a champion of optimism and hard work attributes recognized by Ayala Foundation which helped him pursue a college degree. Through a scholarship program, he took up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English at the Divine Word College of Calapan. He started to live a city life that was once a fantasy for him, taking pride in his skin color which earned people’s respect and honor to his tribe. Together with other Mangyan scholars from diverse ethnic groups in the province, he fancied modern means of living yet served as a role model other Mangyan pupils in promoting color and ethnic distinction. “I have always been a victim of discrimination whether on my first day at school, riding in a jeep heading home, shopping in a mall, or even by just walking alone. These challenges never hindered me for staying driven. Sometimes it hit my self-esteem, but most of the time I just laughed at it.” From the tone of his skin, the intricacy of his curly hair and shortness of his legs, he has always been loud and proud. After finishing his course, he attended his review classes covered by his scholarship. He then passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and applied for a teaching position in a private school. Not later than a year, he decided to go back to the mountains and tried his fate. He was hired as an elementary teacher at Baclayan Mangyan School where he currently teaches most of the Iraya children in his community. As he continuously shares his love for his ethnic identity, while trying his best to educate learners, Sir Pino has captured the hearts of many people and has enabled them to believe that they can positively create themselves despite being unique and different. Teachers are regarded as the cultivators of knowledge and inspiration to their students enabling them to reach their maximum potentials. And for Sir Pino, passion and optimism will make learning brighter, love and humility will set it sunnier and pride of one’s identity will light it forever. After ten minutes, Mrs. Benitez started calling the attention of the students in her class 19 Mrs. Benitez: Class, did you like and understand the story of Sir Pino? Class: Yes, Ma’am! Mrs. Benitez: Anyone who can share his thoughts about the story of the Iraya’s pride from Oriental Mindoro? Student 2: Ma’am, Sir Pino’s story is really inspiring. Several photo editing applications are conquering the limelight of virtual beauty. The excessive use of photoshop can be traced in most of the photos we see. And for people who have access to technological advancement, no one is an exception. From advertisement or entertainment industry, social media has been part of people’s lives more specifically to the younger generations. Yet, in an attempt to get famous, through displaying of ideal physical appearances, people nowadays forget the true essence of authentic beauty. Photoshop and filtered applications are invented for conveniences. These photo editing apps have become society’s mainstream tools for enhancing one’s physical appearance online. Nonetheless, beauty and perfection ideals reflect the vanity and unnecessary sophistication for some. Celebrities and television personalities have been the usual subjects in the issue of questionable splendor. From lengthening necks and legs to raising cheekbones, lips pouting, toning skin color, and lightening of pores, these beauty effects are endless. These made the media-savvy young people compromise their natural looks for the sake of social media exposure. Youths suffer from eating disorders in order to achieve fit body goals influenced by some media personalities. They tend to engage themselves in some dietary routines which do not have any medical-related basis or evidence. A culture like this affects the youths as they try to hide their flaws and imperfections at all costs instead of learning to positively embrace them. As society gets to see beauty from the lenses of technology-controlled software, celebrities and media personalities who post raw, unedited photos become the subjects of ridicule in social media. They become victims of cyber bullying and online bashing which are detrimental to their self-esteem and mental health. And even the members of the young generation are not spared from this scenario as they also become subjects of these form of violence and abuse in the internet. These are some of the disadvantages of social media applications. However, it cannot be denied that these have also positive effects. Image editing software has revolutionized the art of photo processing and people’s perception of reality – from ideals of beauty to media manipulation. Through photoshop and other software, an ideal person can be created. Anyone can attain good looks. Anyone can be great. Yet this practice is now branded as desperate living for simulated and manipulated art of beauty. Expectation versus reality has been people’s great dilemma. My own take away from this blog: Technological advancement fueled by the use of these apps modernizes people’s perception and standards of beauty and generally, most of the things in life. However, let us not allow ourselves to be solely defined by these standards. In the midst of filtered reality in social media, let us make our good values unfiltered, intact to our core and unchanging beyond these fastchanging times. Del Valle The Filipino heroes live on because their heroism was already imprinted in the history of our country. From the depths of oppression and despair, they rose to scale the heights of freedom so that the next generations could enjoy the fruits of what they fought for. Today, a new breed of heroes exists among the medical front-liners who strive to attend and cure the patients infected by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, a virus which is unseen and deadly. The virus causes Covid-19 disease that affects the respiratory system. It originated from China, and is now considered a world-wide pandemic. Del Valle A talented or an achiever child is what parents want their kids to be aside from being healthy, loving, happy and educated. No wonder many parents whether rich or struggling in life, are willing to invest all their savings just to raise a talented kid. However, every child has his or her own time of development. Others may develop skills early on and others may not. It is said that the child’s sensitive stages of development is when he or she becomes more responsive to stimuli and acts faster in acquiring a certain skill. It is impressive to see students excel at a certain endeavor. Parents should aim for holistic development, which would equip their child to face real-life challenges. However, there are those who develop or evolve later in their lives. For instance, Juan dela Cruz may learn to read slowly today, but he may have other skills worthy of praise. It takes time to learn something but it doesn’t mean a child is not learning. Early training and exposure may accelerate the making of linguists or a musical expert. An athlete may develop later. A sports expert said that sport specialization begins after, but not before puberty (during or after 15 years). It promotes success in sports because early specialization increases rates of injury and stress which makes children quit sports. Parents should simply guide children in sports selection, as they are the strongest influence on the decision of their kids to engage in sports. 27 There are lots of chances on learning a particular skill or talent even when training is initiated beyond a period, but it may require more effort. Parents should not overly focus on the development of one skill at the expense of other aspects of a child’s life. Less pressure, more fun and intrinsic motivation promotes success. BEATING NEGATIVITY Pinky P. Del Valle Dramatic and drastic changes are happening around us. The good thing is that change happens all the time. It’s the only constant thing that we have to deal whether we like it or not. It’s better if it happens fast, when it comes to changing a habit. Habits, whether good or bad, are not done overnight. To change them, an individual needs to transform his way of thinking, views, and the subconscious mechanism that work like an integrated circuit in the brain. Once the system is established, the action becomes easier to repeat than to eliminate because it is already ingrained. A well-renowned author claimed that if you are trying to change the bad habit of thinking negatively about everything, you have to think and understand first of what leads you to it. Then, you need to get all the necessary information about your behavior and what it can do to you and to the people close to you. As it is said, knowledge is power. The next step is to expose oneself to people who are positive thinkers. Mingling with them makes you think differently as your views clash with others. And lastly, you need to have a substitute action whenever the urge to think negatively is strong. Finding someone to talk to, planting, cleaning, cooking, singing- whatever action that will cut the system from running its course- might help. Lots of chances are in your hands. 30 It seems easy to think negatively of whatever is happening in the Philippines with all its social ills and challenges.
