Tuckman's Model

What happens if forming stage was not done properly? Provide reference.
To be effective, team members must be able to collaborate in order to contribute
collectively to team outcomes. However, this does not happen by itself: it develops as the
team works together. In his 1965 paper, "Developmental Sequence in Small Groups,"
psychologist Bruce Tuckman coined the phrase "forming, storming, norming, and
performing," describing the path that teams take to high performance. So, what really
happens at Tuckman’s Forming Stage? In the first stage which is the forming of
Tuckman’s Developmental Sequence in Small Groups, it is when the members of the
team first come together to meet. It can be considered the period of interaction when
everyone is getting to know one another and becoming acquainted. Also, group members
are on high alert, each wanting to put their best foot forward while, at the same time,
sizing up each other’s strengths and weaknesses. (Calvello, 2021)
Unfortunately, if it is not done properly during the forming stage, or if there is no
team leader who emerges, takes charge, and directs the individual members, the team
will experience misunderstandings, workflows will be slowed, and the risk of failure will
increase. Members of the group may believe that they imply new leadership for guidance
and direction. A leader must be clear in communicating the project's outcome and
expectations. Due to anxiety and uncertainty, there may also be little agreement on team
objectives, everyone's individual roles, and responsibilities as group members in this
stage tend to act independently and are cautious of their behavior. In the forming stage,
there are challenges like personal relations characterized by dependence in which group
members have a desire for acceptance by the group and a need to know that the group
is safe. If this is not done correctly, group members may develop a lack of trust, and
interpersonal conflict, and begin acting out. According to Priestly (2015), if the team leader
allows this phase to spiral out of control as conflicts, controversy, and even personal
opinions emerge, it can be extremely destructive and demotivating.
