GRAVITATIONAL, ELECTRICAL, & MAGNETIC FIELD UNIT PROJECT Evaluation: Student product, Conversation Subject: _Physics12__ Course Code: _SPH4U__ Student’s Name: _____STACY EBOT__________________ Grade: _12____ Marks obtained: ________/64 Knowledge & Thinking Communication Application Understanding & Inquiry Total Marks Marks Obtained 16 16 16 16 Total 64 Due Date: Feb. 21 Name: Teacher’s Name: Ms. Maqbool Course: SPH4U-C1 Important: Communication marks would be included from video presentation. It should show your understanding of the project and unit, not just reading the project or assignment. Project should consist of all references used to complete the assignment, including all citations. Don’t forget to attach the cover page. Note to teachers: this assignment addresses specific expectation A2.2 from p. 197 of the Ontario Science Curriculum, Grades 11 and 12. Overall Expectations: A2. identify and describe careers related to the fields of science under study, and describe the contributions of scientists, including Canadians, to those fields. D1. analyse the operation of technologies that use gravitational, electric, or magnetic fields, and assess the technologies’ social and environmental impact; Instructions: One advance in field technology that has benefited the medical community is the Navigation Brain Stimulation (NBS). NBS is a safe and non-invasive device that uses short magnetic pulses to monitor the activity of the human brain and central nervous system. Source: Nelson, Physics12 Figure 1 The Navigated Brain Stimulation (NBS) is a technology that uses magnetic fields to safely monitor the workings of the human brain. How does NBS work? Magnetic pulses from the device stimulate specific areas of the brain. NBS then monitors and records the brain’s localized and general reactions to the stimulation. The brains of people who have diseases or a history of trauma will react differently from those of healthy people. NBS is therefore a very useful tool for diagnosing certain disorders of the brain and central nervous system. Researchers also think that specific pulses from NBS may one day be useful in treating depression and chronic pain. The principles of gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields are used in a broad range of technologies. Field theory principles are often used together to design and build more complex technology. In order to launch communications satellites and keep them in orbit, for example, you need a deep understanding of all three fields. To design a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine requires a strong knowledge of both electric and magnetic fields. The Task Your task is to research and analyze an existing technology that uses a combination of two or more fields. Consider how the different fields are used together, and how this combination affects the design of the technology. Consider the technology’s impact on society, the economy, and the environment. You will prepare and present a full technical report of your analysis and evaluations. Procedure: 1. Choose resource tools such as the Internet, field experts, and magazine and journal articles to research a technology that operates using applied field theory. Examples include medical devices, electric cars, space land rovers, and communications devices. 2.Once you have chosen a technology to research, analyze and describe the interactions of the fields. Explain how their interactions influenced the design of the technology. 3.Develop an evaluation tool to assess the social, economic, and environmental impacts of your chosen technology. How will you determine the effects? Consider and discuss both positive and negative impacts. 4.Consider the following in your assessment: What is the developmental timeline of the technology you chose? What physics principles are present in the design of the technology? What mathematical and physics formulas may have been applied in the technology? What are some advantages and disadvantages of the technology? How does the technology impact the economy, the environment, and society? What careers are associated with the technology? What improvements are being made to the design and use of the chosen technology? Communicate /16 Prepare a professional communication that summarizes your analysis and evaluation of your chosen technology and its impacts on society. Your presentation may be a video presentation and a written report including statistics, images, and graphics.
