Prayer Heavenly father, grant me each day the desire to do my best, to grow mentally and morally as well as physically. To be kind and helpful to my classmates and teachers, to be honest with myself as well as with others. Help me to be a good sport and smile when I lose as well as when I win. Teach me the value of true friendship. Help me to always conduct myself so as to bring credit to my school. Amen. Layers of the Earth Quarter 3, Week 1, Day 1 Layers of the Earth • Earth is made up of layers with different compositions Layers of the Earth Layers of the Earth Crust is the outermost and thinnest layer of the Earth (around 5 to 70 km deep). The crust that lies beneath the ocean bed is called oceanic crust, while the land is called the continental crust. Layers of the Earth Mantle is the thickest layer of the Earth. The mantle is semi-liquid, sort of like a malleable plastic and makes up 84% of Earth's volume. It is divided into upper mantle (up to 670 km below the surface) and lower mantle (between 670 to 2890 km below the surface). Layers of the Earth Outer core is located beneath the mantle (2,200 km thick). It is made up of hot, molten iron and nickel (up to 5,000°C). This layer spins as the planet rotates and creates Earth's magnetic field, which helps to protect us from the Sun's solar radiation. Layers of the Earth Inner core is the deepest layer of the Earth. It’s about 1,230 to 1,530 km thick and can be as hot as the surface of the sun, about 5505 °C. Like the outer core, it is made up of iron and nickel, but due to high pressure, these metals remain solid.
