Gen Ed 2 CA1 Presentation Summary The narrative experience of The Climb by Jon Mabe and Jessi Alexander is trying to tell us that in life, there will always be an obstacle blocking us from our goals, but we must persevere, push through hard times and not give up in the face of adversity. Narrative Structures Exposition The exposition is the part where Miley Cyrus sings “I can almost see it. That dream I am dreaming. But there's a voice inside my head saying, "You'll never reach it".” She starts by introducing that she is very close to her goals but she cannot reach it. Rising action The rising action is the part where Miley Cyrus sings “Every step I'm taking. Every move I make feels. Lost with no direction. My faith is shaking. But I gotta keep trying. Gotta keep my head held high”, because it shows her climbing step by step Climax The climax is the part where Miley Cyrus sings “There's always gonna be another mountain. I'm always gonna wanna make it move. Always gonna be an uphill battle. Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose. Ain't about how fast I get there. Ain't about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb”. Resolution The resolution is the ending part where Miley Cyrus sings “Keep on moving, keep climbing. Keep the faith, baby. It's all about, it's all about the climb. Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa.” Main Character Development She is a flat character. Throughout the song, she was emphasising on overcoming her obstacles and never giving up, she did not change her mindset. This is a first-person perspective as it used words like “I” and “I’m”. Examples are “The struggles I’m facing, the chances I’m taking “and “I can almost see it”. In the film, Cyrus plays Miley Stewart, a character with a secret double life as superstar Hannah Montana. Hannah Montana faces trouble hiding her identity as a singer from the people she knows, she slowly found ways to hide her identity and prevent other from finding out. She learnt that it is not easy to live life as a star and a student at the same time. Backstory The backstory of the character or the narrative experience is that the character Hannah Montana faces many issues in her life and she “wrote” this song about how she pushed through them and never give up. Theme The theme is perseverance because The song emphasises that one should not give up even though there will be many obstacle in life, and to push through them and overcome it. The other theme is following your dreams because the song also emphasises that one should always follow their dreams and not give up Message The message of this narrative experience is for the listener to never give up on theirs goals and in life. Even if there are obstacles along the way, they have to push through it and continue working hard. The evidence for this message is because the song states that “ 'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain. I'm always gonna wanna make it move” Messaging Techniques The messaging techniques support the message because under: Association: It associate the obstacle in our life to climbing a mountain, and it impacts me as climbing a mountain isn’t easy so overcoming our obstacle won’t be easy as well Emotional Appeal: Everyone will definitely face an obstacle in life, so this song allows everyone to relate to it. Personal Story One story I have to share is about my sec 3 track and field competition. I failed to qualify for the finals of my first event. Did not give up and qualified for the finals in my second event. This is related back to the message of the experience because it taught me not to give up and work even harder for my future races. Thank you for your kind attention.
