Let’s Explore and Discover
Unlocking
of Difficulties
Emergence – the
process of
appearing; of
becoming known or
developing.
As you begin exploring the new lesson today, I want
you to ponder on some essential questions. Are you ready?
Great! Let us begin.
Have you ever wondered how the different disciplines
under Social Sciences emerged and who pioneered them?
Do you know the existing conditions that led to their
existence?
In this lesson, you will be able to discover the answers to these questions. The
disciplines under Social Sciences did not emerge overnight, it is a result of thorough
thinking combined with different social realities that existed in the past. You can refer to
the succeeding matrix to see the historical context that led to the emergence of each
discipline.
2
HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF THE EMERGENCE OF EACH DISCIPLINE
DISCIPLINE/PIONEER/
CONTRIBUTIONS
ANTHROPOLOGY
HISTORICAL FOUNDATION/ BACKGROUND
✓ Traces its roots from natural history
which is the study of plants, animals,
and humans with reference to their
history and native environment.
✓ The discovery and contact to new
civilizations by European explorers and
colonizers led to curiosity and questions
of who these people are, who their
ancestors were, how they are related to
other people in other places, what
makes them distinct, what similarities
they share with the rest, how they
conduct their way of life, and what
culture they have in terms of knowledge
they possess, their beliefs, technology,
etcetera.
✓ It was only in the 19th century that the
discipline began its formative years as a
Social Science; though since the ancient
times, there were already illustrations,
chronicles, and travelogues containing
descriptions of human culture and
civilizations.
✓ It was not considered a separate
discipline until the 19th century.
✓ Greeks examined wealth accumulation
and inquired on whether property
should be in the hands of public and
private institutions.
✓ During medieval times, scholars argued
that it was a moral obligation of
businesses to sell goods at a just price.
✓ Economic though evolved through
feudalism in the Middle Ages to
mercantilist theory in the renaissance,
when people were concerned to orient
trade policy to further the national
interest.

thought can propel change in economic
policy.

for
professional
historiography in East Asia was

✓ Through Medieval and Renaissance
periods, History was often studied
through
a
sacred
or
religious
perspective.

modern methods of historiography in
the 17th and 18th centuries, especially
