Moin Vohra 28/02/2019 Lord of the Flies – Essential Questions 1. What is irony and how does it impact the meaning? Irony is when something happens when the opposite is expected, in literature this can give deeper meaning to a text by keeping the writer interested and creating twists. This also adds to a character as we are able to see how they behave and handle unexpected situation. 2. How is this key moment an example of irony? (the passing ship) The passing ship would be expected to stop and rescue the boys from the island seeing the beacon fire, but Ralph realises the beacon fire is out, which is an unexpected turn of events. The character Ralph’s dedication to the fire is shown as he sprints as fast as he can to the fire and Jack’s carelessness for the beacon fire is also shown thanks to the unexpected turn of events.
