Part 1 1. Recall the details about the kernel components of a Windows operating system (OS). Based on the figure below, select three (3) kernel components that you think are the most significant in terms of process control. I/O Manager Power Manager Plug-and-play Manager 2. Give one (1) sample process that can be executed by each kernel component you have selected. Explain each sample process relative to its corresponding process control structure. Perform additional research if necessary. The I/O manager is the heart of the I/O system. It connects applications and system components to virtual, logical, and physical devices, and it defines the infrastructure that supports device drivers. The Windows kernel-mode power manager manages the orderly change in power status for all devices that support power state changes. This is often done through a complex stack of devices controlling other devices. Plug and Play (PnP) is a combination of hardware technology and software techniques that enables a PC to recognize when a device is added to the system. With PnP, the system configuration can change with little or no input from the user. For example, when a USB thumb drive is plugged in, Windows can detect the thumb drive and add it to the file system automatically. However, to do this, the hardware must follow certain requirements and so must the driver. Part 2 a. What is the operating system of the device? - Windows 11 (PC) b. Which has higher memory utilization in your device, the background/system processes or the application processes? - The application processes. As you can see from my response to question d, even though I only use a single app, it still uses far more memory than the background processes. Knowing which programs consume the most ram on your device is always a good idea, even if a resource-heavy app seems to be functioning OK. Typically, intensive applications like video and image editors, as well as games, need a lot of memory to run smoothly. g. Give three (3) possible ways to connect your device to other devices. Describe each in one (1) sentence. - This is the simplest way to connect your phone. You simply plug the phone’s USB cable (supplied with most smartphones) into your computer, keyboard or mouse USB port, or into an adaptor if their USB ports are not compatible. You can use Bluetooth to connect some devices to your phone without a cord. Unlike Bluetooth, WiFi does not work ‘device to device’ but instead needs a special piece of hardware to maintain the WiFi signal. h. Does the process of connecting your device to other devices create new processes? Why or why not? Yes, when two or more computers are connected together so they can communicate with one another, they form a network. The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the internet, all collecting and sharing data. i. What are the possible effects of ending (force stop) multiple processes in your device? Elaborate on your answer. - When you close an app on your phone the traditional way, by dragging it to the trash can, most people assume that it has been completely closed. It's not always the case, though. However, some apps (such as music players, health monitoring apps, instant messengers, etc.) may continue to function in the background, updating their content and sending notifications long after you have closed them. They persist in the background regardless of how many times you kill their processes. Force When you close an app, it will immediately cease all of its front and background operations. j. Describe the functionality of your device in the less-privileged mode. - The term "user mode" is commonly used to refer to the less-privileged mode, as this is where most user programs run. A process's access to the computer's hardware is restricted when it operates in user mode. k. Identify at least two (2) ways on how you can terminate processes in your device and briefly describe each. - In most cases, stopping a process in the Task Manager can restore stability to your computer, however halting a process can force a program to terminate all together or even cause your computer to crash, with the potential loss of any unsaved work. It is best practice to save any relevant data before terminating a process. - If you're confident that Windows already contains everything you need to fix a wide range of issues, then you can give this approach a shot. Since Windows' Command Prompt is so powerful and versatile, you may expect it to have no trouble terminating a few of errant processes.
