Lesson 3: Miracles of Jesus Christ
Jesus Heals Many Sick and Oppressed at Evening
reason that Jesus does miracles
Matt. 8:16-17 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many
that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word,
and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our
sicknesses.
Because Jesus is restoring the people to the way God intended them to be.
To prove that he was the divine Son of God, to strengthen the faith of those
who believed in him, because he loved and had compassion for those in
need, and because of the faith of those who believed.
1. Jesus Turns Water into Wine at the Wedding in Cana
The Gospel book of John in the New Testament tells us of the first
miracle that Jesus performed at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Mary,
Jesus's mother, was attending a wedding that had run out of wine.
She came to Jesus and asked him to do something to help and he
tells the servants to fill six jars with water and take it to the director
of the feast. The director of the wedding tastes what is given to him
and is astonished when he realizes the fine quality of the wine.
Jesus Heals an Official's Son at Capernaum in Galilee
Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into
wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at
Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from
Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was
close to death.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit From a Man in Capernaum
Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit
cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to
destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said
Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” The impure spirit shook the man violently
and came out of him with a shriek. The people were all so amazed that they
asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He
even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” News about him
spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Peter's Mother-in-Law Sick With Fever
Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told
Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand, and helped her up. The
fever left her and she began to wait on them.
Mark 1:32-34 32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him
all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. 33 And all
the city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many that
were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the
devils to speak, because they knew him.
Luke 4:40-41 40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick
with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every
one of them, and healed them. 41 And devils also came out of many, crying
out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them
suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
First Miraculous Catch of Fish on the Lake of Gennesaret
Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and
fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish
which you have just caught.” 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net
to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there
were so many, the net was not broken.
Jesus Cleanses a Man With Leprosy
A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are
willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his
hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately
the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. Jesus sent him away at once with
a strong warning: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show
yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for
your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
Jesus Heals a Centurion's Paralyzed Servant in Capernaum
When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for
help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord,
I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word,
and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with
soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’
and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus
heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you,
I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that
many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the
feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the
subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the
centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant
was healed at that moment.
