Christmas
Truce
“The day the great war was put on pause”
Objective:
• Students will be able to
self reflect on the actions
taken by the soldiers in
the trenches during the
Christmas Truce.
Christmas Truce:
• Many believed at the start of WW1 that the war would be
long over by Christmas (5 months from the start)
• On Christmas-Eve 1914, German soldiers emerged from
their trenches on the Western Front, across No-Man’s
Land, towards the Allied trenches calling out “Merry
Christmas!”
The rest of the story you will have to wait
and see for yourself…
Vocab to Know:
• Truce- an agreement between
enemies or opponents to stop
fighting or arguing for a certain
time.
• Ceasefire- a temporary
suspension of fighting, typically
one during which peace talks
take place
They even played some soccer!!!
Reflect:
• Do you believe it was justified for these soldiers to stop mid war
and celebrate a holiday? Why or why not?
• How do you think the soldiers felt celebrating, sharing gifts, and
playing games with the same people they deemed as their
“enemies?”
