Christmas Truce “The day the great war was put on pause” Objective: • Students will be able to self reflect on the actions taken by the soldiers in the trenches during the Christmas Truce. Christmas Truce: • Many believed at the start of WW1 that the war would be long over by Christmas (5 months from the start) • On Christmas-Eve 1914, German soldiers emerged from their trenches on the Western Front, across No-Man’s Land, towards the Allied trenches calling out “Merry Christmas!” The rest of the story you will have to wait and see for yourself… Vocab to Know: • Truce- an agreement between enemies or opponents to stop fighting or arguing for a certain time. • Ceasefire- a temporary suspension of fighting, typically one during which peace talks take place They even played some soccer!!! Reflect: • Do you believe it was justified for these soldiers to stop mid war and celebrate a holiday? Why or why not? • How do you think the soldiers felt celebrating, sharing gifts, and playing games with the same people they deemed as their “enemies?”
