ASSIGNMENT 3-EDUC5710-AY2021-T2
EXAMINE THE CHOICE OF DOWN SYNDROME AS THE DISABILITY TO
CREATE AWARENESS AMONG STUDENT TEACHERS OF COGNITIVE,
PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL DISABILITY IN GENERAL.
According to Crosta, P. (2017) down syndrome “ is a genetic condition that occurs
when there is an extra copy of a specific chromosome: chromosome 21.Down
syndrome is not an illness...The extra chromosome can affect a person’s physical
features, intellect, and overall development. It also increases the likelihood of some
health problems.”
Awareness can be created by reading articles on down syndrome so that they get
enough information about it. They get to meet, mix and mingle with people with down
syndrome and get to know them better. Visit families with children with down
syndrome and get to ask questions they don’t understand from their parents. Watching
educative videos on down syndrome. We can get to show the about successful people
with down syndrome so that they realize that they are also capable of becoming who
they want to be in life. Down syndrome is not a disease and so these kids are quite
capable of performing though some may be affected cognitively.According to Guide
To Psychological Disorders (2020) says they might not be associated with low
intelligence. This means that an individual (child or adult) who is otherwise intelligent
or competent in other learning areas” Student teachers can also attend events that have
to do with down syndrome in which they are celebrated just like world cancer day and
dress up for the occasion, for example t-shirts for the down syndrome. Encouraging
inclusion again also help create awareness among students teachers.

ASSIGNMENT 3-EDUC5710-AY2021-T2
CHOOSE ANOTHER DISABILITY TO CREATE AWARENESS AMONG
STUDENT TEACHERS OF DISABILITIES IN GENERAL.
Another disability that awareness can be created is that of the of students who are
bipolar. Students can be made aware of it by just talking about it. According to
Howard, G. (2018) says“…talk about bipolar disorder. The more open and honest we
are, the better.” Talking about bipolar to different people as well as making use of
media that is watching videos and reading materials on bipolar. Reading articles and
watching videos on bipolar. Strong, A.(2019) says that “ bipolar disorder affects
everyone differently and it affects us in a variety of different ways.” The student
teachers have to spend time with children with bipolar to get to know and understand
them. They can also participate in special events that have to do with bipolar. Strong,
A. (2019) says “…there are events, like NAMI Walks—National Alliance on Mental
Illness walks which happen throughout the year. There’s World Bipolar Day, which
falls reliably on March 30th, and Mental Illness Awareness Week, during the first
Week of October”.
ARGUE WHICH DISABILITY YOU WOULD CHOOSE TO RAISE
AWARENESS IF YOU COULD ONLY CHOOSE ONE. EXPLAIN YOUR
REASONS.
Between the two disabilities above, I would to create awareness for the down
syndrome. Symptoms or signs for down syndrome are easy to see or identify than
bipolar. There are a lot of ways in which awareness on it can be done. People with
down syndrome can have health difficulties like miscalculate. These are symptoms
that easily noticeable and easy to explain. “Dyscalculia is not usually associated with
low intelligence…” ( Guide To Psychological Disorders ,2020) .
