01
Introduction of
Pollution and
noise pollution
 Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials
into the environment.
 These harmful materials are called pollutants.
 Pollution is caused by human activity.
 There are many types of pollution in our world but
one of the most common type of pollution in our
world is Noise pollution.
What is Noise pollution ?
 Noise is a one type of sound which is
undesirable to hear.
 Noise pollution can be defined as
unwanted sound.
 Noise measured by sound level meter.
Difference Between Sound and Noise
Sound
Noise
1. It is pleasant to hear.
2. It has a regular period.
1. It is unpleasant to hear.
2. It has no regular period
motion.
3. It has constant pitch.
3. It has constant varying
pitch.
4. Unit= decibel(dB)
4. unit= hertz(Hz)
SOUND MEASURING
DEVICE SOUND
LEVEL METER
 This device is known as a sound level meter.
 This device measure the Noise by using
frequency.
 This device measure Noise in the Unit of
decibel denoted by dB.
 The basic parts of sound level meter include a
microphone, amplifiers, weighting system and
display reading system.

Household Sources
 Gadgets like food mixer, grinder, pressure cookers, coolers,
air- conditioners, exhaust fans, vacuum cleaners, dryer and
washing machines, can be very noisy and injurious to health.
 Other include loud speakers of sound systems and Tv’s, iPods
and ear phones.
 Another example may be your neighbor's dog barking all
night everyday at every shadow it sees, disturbing everyone
else in the apartment.
Social Events
 Place of worship ,discos and gigs parties and
other social events also create a lot of noise for
the people living in that area.
 In many market areas, people sell with loud
speakers, other shout out offers and try to get
customers to buy their good.
 It is important to note that whey these events are
not often, then can be called “Nuisance” rather
than noise pollution.
Commercial & Industrial Activities
 Most of the manufacturing companies and
worldwide industries use big machines that can
produce a large amount of noise.
 Apart from that, different equipment such as
exhaust fans, compressors, grinding mills, and
many more participate in producing big sound.
 The wide-ranging exposure to high levels of
sound can damage the hearing abilities of the
workers.

EFFECT OF
NOISE
POLLUTION
Interference with communication
Heath effects
Annoyance
A
Loss of hearing
 Loud noise can damage cells and membranes
in the cochlea.
 Listening to loud noise for a long time can
overwork hair cells in the ear, which can cause
these cells to die.
 The hearing loss progresses as long as the
exposure continues.
 Harmful effects might continue even after
noise exposure has stopped.
B
Health effects
 Noise pollution adversely affects the lives of
millions of people.
 Problems related to noise include stress related
illnesses, high blood pressure, speech
interference, hearing loss, sleep disruption, and
lost productivity.
 Noise is directly Effected our barin. Some time
absorb this effect.
C
Interference with
communication
 A person face the problem of trying to understand another
person talking to another person in an environment with high
background noise level.
 Background noise directly affected the efficiency of offices,
schools and other place where communication is of vital
importance.
 The maximum acceptable level of noise under such condition
is 55dB.
 Background noise level of 70dB is considered very noise.
D
Working efficiency
 Efficiency directly decreased whenever a
person is working in the noisy environment.
04
CONTROL OF NOISE
POLLUTION
 Proper maintenance and lubrication of machines
can reduce noise.
 Sources of Noise pollution like heavy vehicles ,
airports, Noise producing industries etc. should be
located away from populated area.
 Silence zones should be created around residential
areas, educational institution and hospitals.
 Noisy machines should be installed in sound proof
chambers.
 Planting more trees having bored leaves which
can absorb sound.
 Use of loud-speaker and amplifiers should be
restricted to a fixed intensity and fixed hours of
the day.
 Restricting the unnecessary horn blowing by laws.
 Occupational exposure to Noise can be reduced
by using protective devices such as ear plugs.
Role of Every Individual in Prevention
of Pollution
 There are lots of environmental problem caused by
human actions on the environment.
 We must recognize that each of us is individually
responsible for quality of the environment we live in.
 Our personal actions worsen or improve the quality
of our environment.
Some of the following suggestions to
decreases the pollution of
environment
 At least all people planting one trees, plant are reduce air
pollution and noise pollution.
 Use eco-friendly products.
 Reduce your dependency on fossil fuel especially coal or
oil.
 Try to avoid asking plastic bags when you buy vegetables
or glossary, intend use cloth bags.
 Save electricity .
 Use mass transportation system . For short-visits use bicycle
or go on foot and decrease the use to automobile.
