ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
IDENTIFYING THE PARTS AND FEATURES OF ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
An Argumentative Essay is a genre of writing that requires students to investigate a topic, collect,
generate, and evaluate evidence and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. It is highly
persuasive and logical.
An argumentative essay:
a. Presents and explains an issue or case
b. Gives reasons and supports to prove its point
c. Refutes or proves wrong opposing arguments
PARTS OF AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
1. Introduction - introduces the problem and gives the background information needed for the argument and
a clear, concise and defined thesis statement - concise summary of main point
Example:
Children's of social media is highly debated issue. Parents are divided into two issue. Many people
think that social media does not hurt children. Children should not use social media because they are
influenced by seeing unreal lives.
2. Body - contains paragraphs that gives evidential support whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal.
3. Conclusion - restates the main claim and gives one or two general statements which summarizes the
arguments and supports the main premise
HOW TO WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
1. Select an arguable topic, preferably one which interests, puzzles, or appeals to you.
2. Take a position on your topic and form a thesis statement.
3. Present clear and convincing evidence
4. Draft your essay
