One Week Executive Training Program on Environmental Impact Assessment Date: April 27, 2020 - May 3, 2020 Organised By Centre for Climate Change & Sustainability Studies School of Habitat Studies Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai 27th April - 3rd May 2020 The Centre for Climate Change & Sustainability Studies, School of Habitat Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai invites applications for a oneweek certificate program on “Environmental Impact Assessment” from 27th April to 3rd May 2020 About the EIA Certificate Program The Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, 1996 and subsequent amend to it in 2006 is one of the most critical regulations governing the field of environment in India. Unlike many other environmental laws, which are generally area and subject specific, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), has application throughout the length and breadth of the country for various categories of activities. It applies irrespective of whether the proposed project is in urban, rural, forest or other areas. Despite the rules and regulations specifying the methods to be followed in preparing EIA reports and following the procedure, there have been gaps in the preparation of EIA reports. This has resulted in litigation and pending of thousands of infrastructure projects across India. In recent past, attempts have been made to address the challenges in the preparation of EIA reports and address the legal questions through orientation and workshops at different levels ranging from pollution control board to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. However, what is lacking is developing a comprehensive and nuanced engagement with both legal and technical dimension of EIA. Keeping in view this existing lacuna, the Centre for Climate Change & Sustainability Studies of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai is organising a oneweek certificate program on EIA. The proposed certificate program will focus on two major components of EIA (1) legal and governance process of environmental clearance and (2) technical and scientific aspects of EIA report. This will enable the participants to get a comprehensive understanding of both process and technical aspects to engage with the EIA process and report writing. The EIA certificate program sessions will be delivered by environmental scientists, EIA experts, lawyers, and academicians. Who Can Apply? This certificate program is open to academicians, research scholars, NGOs, Lawyers, regulatory institutions, SEIAA officials, environment consultants, decision makers and industrial leaders.
