Determinism vs Free Will

advertisement
From the video, what is the definition of determinism and free will? How do they contradict
each other?
Based on the video, determinism means that all events in the present are caused by past or previous
events. For in every effect, there is a cause. Nothing other than what does occur could occur. Free
will means that actions are chosen freely. It is the capability that human beings can freely act and
choose their actions. Free will requires options, but determinism does not allow options. Free will
is the idea that we can have a choice in how we act, and we are free to choose our actions. We
humans can do and act freely. However, the idea of determinism contradicts it. Determinism states
that everything that happens, including our choices and actions, is caused by factors in the past.
Our actions are the inevitable result of what came before. Human actions have all sorts of invisible
causes. So, we may assume that we do something because we freely choose to do so, but we don’t
realize these actions are actually the results of predetermined factors. In addition, our physical
world is deterministic. It means that everything that happens or could happen is already
predetermined, even our actions.
