Types of tournament
single elimination
 Is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately
eliminated from the tournament.
 Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose
winner becomes the tournament champion.
Double elimination
 A type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be
eligible to win the tournament’s championship upon having lost two games or
matches.
 it stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only one defeat
results in elimination.
 More chances to prove yourself. You are still a part of the game until you lose two
times.
Purpose

all contestants remain in championship contention until they lose two games
Advantages



a player or team must be beaten twice to be eliminated
it selects a more adequate winner
it maintains player motivation right up until the end
Disadvantages

it takes longer to run
 One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the
competitors into two sets of brackets, the winners bracket and losers bracket.
 The W Bracket is conducted in the same manner as a single-elimination
tournament, except the losers of each round “drop down” into the L bracket.
Another method of double-elimination tournament management is the Draw and
Process.
 NOTE: Criss cross losers so they don’t play the same team again.
Computing the Number of Games Using the Formula in Double
Elimination Type of Tournament
Formula:
Where:
G = (N-1)2
G – Number of Games
N – Number of Entries
Examples:
There are 5 Participating Teams in Basketball Tournament
G = (N – 1) 2
= (5 – 1) 2
= (4) 2
G=8
Computing the Number of Byes Using the Formula in Double Elimination
Type of Tournament
Formula:
Note:
Bye = P2 – N
P – Least Power of 2 higher or equal than N
Examples:
There are 5 Participating Teams in Basketball Tournament
Bye = P2 – N
=8–5
Bye = 3
Assign Byes and Pairs the Remaining Team
Write the Game Numbers
Round robin
 A tournament in which each competitor plays in turn against all the team (ALL
PLAY – ALL TOURNAMENT)
 Is a format where each team plays a number of games (n-1) depending on how
many teams are participating
How to identify bye in round robin?
 If the number of teams is even, there is no bye, on the other hand, if the number of
team is odd automatic all team have a chance to become a bye.
Advantages

You have the chance to play against all the team
Disadvantages

Time-consuming
1.) Make a schedule of games using the Round Robin type of
Tournament with 7 Participants.
a.
b.
c.
d.
Step One: Compute for the number of games.
Given: N = 7 number of entries
G=?
Formula: G = (N-1)N/2
Solution: G = (7-1)7/2
= (6)7/2
G = 21
Step Two: Compute for the number of games per round.
Given: N = 7 number of entries
Formula: G/R = N/2
G/R = ?
Solution: G/R = N/2
= 7/2
G/R = 3.5 *whole number is 3
Step Three: Compute for the number of rounds.
Given: N = 7 number of entries
Formula: R = G/(G/R)
R=?
Solution: R = G/(G/R)
R = 21/(3)
R=7
Step Four: Ramification
2.) Make a Team Standing Tally Board of the ff 5 Teams. Plot the
Win-Lose result on the tally board. Team with red mark is the
winner of the match.
