How Is It Made?
Chocolate bars
Parts of a chocolate bar
There are many assemblies and components of a Chocolate bar.
Some ingredients may vary from different chocolate bars. These include:
- Cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Packaging
- Milk
- Cocoa solids
- Cocoa butter
- Nuts/toppings*
Materials Needed
The materials used to manufacture Chocolate bars vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Some of the materials listed can be substituted for other materials or can be optional in the
manufacturing process of Chocolate bars. These materials include:
- The amount of any ingredient used
- Different toppings, fillings, and additional ingredients to make each bar unique
Pre-production
Before a Chocolate bar can be manufactured, it needs to have a recipe.
The basic recipe of a Chocolate bar is usually the same so most of the ingredients of the
chocolate bar do not need to be very different from other ones. The way the chocolate is made
is not usually different from other one's, so it is very common. Once the recipe of the chocolate
bar is finished, the manufacturer plans all the steps that are needed to make the chocolate bars.
They get materials and different older versions of other chocolate bars from 3rd party places.
They make moulds to create the chocolate bars and different assembly lines to create the full
bar.
Production
The manufacturing of Chocolate bars differ from brand and type, but the steps that are used in
nearly every chocolate bar process are listed below.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Cleaning the cocoa beans and ingredients.
Roasting the beans to change the colour and flavour
Machines crack the shell of the beans leaving the nibs left.
The chocolate nibs are ground into powder.
5. Cocoa is separated from cocoa butter
6. Milk, sugar, and other ingredients are added to the chocolate liquor to create a unique
chocolate flavour.
7. Conching machines knead the Chocolate Paste.
8. Chocolate is Tempered by Heating, Cooling & Reheating to create a nice texture and
feel.
9. Chocolate is stored either in liquid state or solid state for different purposes.
10. Chocolate is transported or manufactured into a bar shape
11. Bar is sent through wrapping machines that wrap and box the bars for transportation and
consumption.
Marketing
Different brands have different marketing strategies. Some brands use
advertising to market their products such as Lindt. Other brands add some special
Flavours and forms to their Chocolate such as having higher cacao percent or more toppings
and different toppings. Some brands work under other companies, and they market their
chocolate as a different type of chocolate than their other/main chocolate brand.
