That is why, the visitors especially the Spaniards were attracted to it. They are one of the visitors that had brought change to the Philippines – religion, education system, way of life, etc. They were led by one of the most famous voyagers in the world. His name is Ferdinand Magellan. On March 16, 1521, he found the country unexpectedly when he was trying to look for an alternate route to discover lands where he could gather resources for spices, golds, and expanding Spanish territory by spreading their religion which is Christianity. After that, he started to carry out his plans. He searched for some people in tribes and made friends with their leader. By doing so, he knew that he could get the trust of the members of the tribe. Some of the leaders were fascinated by his words and kind gestures. He gave the native gifts as his way of making them like him. Then, he started to spread his country’s religion -which was his primary goal - by conducting mass and baptizing them into Christianity. o Natural Resources- materials created in nature that are used by humans. Example, forest, sun, etc.. o Spices – it helps to make the foods delicious. o Christianity is the religion that is based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, or its beliefs and practices. o Territory is an area of land under the authority of a ruler or state. Magellan observed that the ocean was peaceful or calm and called it, Mar Pacifico; the name remains in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese usage—giving the Pacific Ocean its new name. Activity A.
