Journaling is essential to the CBT coaching process. Why? Moving negative thoughts out of your head and onto paper is important because the act of writing recalibrates the area of your brain that keeps a firm grip on happy thoughts. Using the writing process to identify ways that you can improve your situation instills hope for the future. Even if you don't take action on every possible solution, your brain begins to accept that there are ways to feel better. The part of your brain that is dampening your happy thoughts recognizes, through your writing, that unhappy thoughts do not need to be permanent. Please Note: Journaling doesn't only mean in the traditional sense of writing out every experience you have. Journaling also entails simply capturing your negative thoughts on paper so that they can be challenged at a later time when your emotions aren't running so high.
