The Cathedral Summary
The Cathedral is a short story about the importance of making connections between one
another. The story focuses on two men, Bub and Robert, who are introduced to each other by
Bub’s wife. Bub displays a very mean-spirited attitude, as well as a rather cold heart. The story
begins as Bub is waiting for Robert to visit their house. Having learned from his wife that Robert
is a blind man, Bub sits alone in his house making all kinds of unfair assumptions about the man.
After chatting, having dinner together, and finally drawing a cathedral together so Robert could
feel what one looked like, Bub came to realize that he and Robert aren’t so different. The story
ends with Bub seeming to have gained much more respect for Robert.
