Centrally located and the country's main transportation hub, Santiago is where most visitors begin their Chilean travels before heading to the Andes or other areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as Easter Island. Santiago is not only the financial and business capital of Chile, it also serves as the country's cultural and entertainment center and is home to endless fun things to do, including visiting its best museums and galleries, along with excellent shopping, dining, and hotel options. The smartest travelers, though, will allow time in their Chile travel itinerary to get to know Santiago. Leaving the capital on an excursion to central Chile's Pacific Coast. This colorful metropolis is the artistic and bohemian soul of the country. VALPARAISO It's filled with street art, music, and poetry. Moreover, it's a throwback to the turn of the 20th century when electric trolleys coasted along the waterfront and lurching funicular elevators carried passengers to the highest points in the city. Admire the colorful houses that elegantly hang off each other, and be amazed that they are all still standing after so many earthquakes. PAGE | 2 Discover the best destinations to visit in 2021! SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA Located in the Antofagasta region of the high Chile arid plateau San Pedro de Atacama is a small town at the edge of the driest desert of the world. Little adobe houses and cozy restaurants are a comfortable base to explore one of Chile’s most spectacular and dramatic landscapes. If you are looking for a good adventure, travel through the desert on a bike, slide down the dunes on a sandboard. CHILOE ISLAND A land of myths and legends, unique folklore and culinary traditions. Visiting Chiloé is like entering a magical world blessed in nature and culture. From the moment you first set foot on this extraordinary island, its singular identity will take you by surprise. It’s home to pastoral landscapes and known for its iconic wooden churches built by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Church of Chonchi. As you venture down to the south of Chile, you will encounter the German influence, as well as Mapuche traditions. PAGE | 3 Discover the best destinations to visit in 2021! TORRES DEL PAINE One of Chile's most important natural areas and an increasingly popular travel destination This park was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1978. It is internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful, unique and uncontaminated places on the planet; and recently declared as the eighth wonder of the world. It is a place of massive glaciers, breathtaking mountain ranges, dense forests, churning rivers, and turquoise lakes, forests and incredible wildlife, all of which make it an exciting destination for wildlife observers and adventure sportsmen alike. EASTER ISLAND This is the island of magic, where moai statues are there to protect you. The magnificent yet remote Easter Island has been inhabited for thousands of years by Polynesians. Despite being more than 3,500 kilometers away from mainland Chile, this fascinating island with its remarkable stone sculptures remains the country's most recognizable attraction. The island is most famous for its nearly 1,000 extant monumental statues, called moai, which were created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park. PAGE | 4 ACTIVITIES come CHILE with us PAGE | 5 EXPLORE TORRES DEL PAINE A hiker's paradise From world-class trekking routes to wild azure lakes, Torres del Paine boasts mesmerizing natural landscapes that will captivate outdoor adventurers at first glimpse. The three granite Torres (towers) that penetrate the skyline have become an icon of the national park, yet they're a mere dot on the horizon when viewed in the context of its 1,810 square-kilometre expanse. The beauty of Torres del Paine National Park extends far beyond the three peaks it is named after. Venture away from the crowded ‘W’ and ‘O’ trekking routes to experience authentic Patagonia in blissful solitude: surrounded by turquoise lakes, dreamy snow-capped mountains, and phenomenal ice-blue glaciers – all without another soul in sight. Plan a visit in spring (mid-September to November) for the best wild camping conditions. While a trip in the summer (December to February) offers the benefit of higher temperatures, it is worth planning ahead as refugios (shelters) can book up fast. PAGE | 6 RELAX IN A HOT SPRING Thanks to its location on the ‘Ring of Fire’, it comes as no surprise that Chile is – quite literally – a hot spot for thermal springs. Hikers in the Los Rios region should visit Termas Geometricas to relax after a muscle-aching long trek. Its maze of brick-red walkways, surrounded by lush green ferns and blossoming flowers, make it easy to mistake for an onsen straight out of Kyoto, Japan. Choose from its 17 hot pools, and when things get too steamy there’s always the option to cool off in the waterfalls. If you're exploring Chile’s wild north, head to Termas Laguna Verde to recline in the circular rock pools with a spectacular view of the world’s highest active volcano, Ojos del Salado, on the horizon. These charming baths are a peaceful spot to soak up the picturesque landscape, and the waters are heated by volcanic activity nearby. GO WILD IN THE ATACAMA DESERT Desolate, dry and otherworldly, the Atacama Desert is a lonely land. But a trip to El Tatio at dawn is always lively: here you can see a phenomenal display of white steam and water spouts spewing from 80 geysers across the area. A day trip to the world’s third largest geyser field is a mustvisit for those exploring the northern regions of Chile, or crossing over from the Bolivian border. PAGE | 7 UNCOVER THE SECRETS OF EASTER ISLAND Easter Island holds some of Chile’s most fascinating history, despite being located 3,500km west from the mainland. The remote island was annexed in 1888, however its original Rapa Nui community had already collapsed, due to slave raiders and outbreaks of disease that were carried to the island by foreign ships. No one quite knows why the Rapa Nui carved more than 800 gigantic stone heads on the island, but they remain a wonder today. Beyond the stone statues, you can hike around the island’s many trails – including a trek up to the extinct volcano of Rano Kau – or make the most of its highest vantage point where you can see the entire island. EXPLORE THE STREET ART IN VALPARAISO Best street to see street art Valparaiso street art is a bold and dramatic example of personal expression. It is different from other cities. Not so much in its style, but in its artists’ passion, respect, and backstory. Unlike the rest of Chile, where street art is illegal or restricted, the Valparaiso government almost encourages this freedom. As a result, Valparaiso is a vibrant, colourful city offering some of the world’s best street art. Valparaiso street art is a bold and dramatic example of personal expression, featuring PAGE 07 entertaining, and political artwork. emotional, PAGE | 8 WALK THROUGH THE VALLA DE LA LUNA A tour of Valley of the Moon Valle de la Luna, which literally translates as "Valley of the Moon," lies 13 kilometers west of San Pedro de Atacama at the north end of the country, near its border with Bolivia, and can be accessed via wellmarked bike trails, tour buses, or self-drive car rentals. This rugged, inhospitable looking landscape in the heart of the Atacama Desert attracts many visitors for its eerie resemblance to the surface of the moon, an effect caused by the erosion of its sand and stone features by wind and water over countless millennia. Despite its remoteness, though, this surprisingly beautiful landscape has sustained life for centuries, both human as well as that of numerous species of flora and fauna. Tourist usually do walking through a magnificent landscape made of sand dunes and sculpted calcareous mountains. Among its most interesting features are its dry lake beds-this is, after all, one of the driest places on the planet-which are dazzlingly white due to deposited salt, and prone to producing fascinating natural saline outcrops. AIR TRANSPORT Flights operate between Chile’s major cities, giving easy and quick access to almost every part of the country. Prices on Chile’s domestic airlines are reasonable. Of course, ground transportation is still much cheaper, but if you need to avoid spending a whole day on a bus, then airlines offer a reasonable alternative. Chile has about 125 airports. BUSES Within the cities, buses travel regularly along fixed routes, and give you a quick and inexpensive way to get around. A typical bus journey is around 300 Chilean pesos (0.45 USD). For long-distance trips, buses are the most popular way to go. Services run between just about every major city throughout Chile, as well as other South American countries. Since many of these bus trips can be 24 hours or more, comfortable reclining seats and sleeper buses are available. PAGE | 11 Travel like a local with Chilean transportation! TAXI Taxis are generally a safe way to travel in Chile, provided you use caution and common sense. Typical rates are around 700 Chilean pesos per kilometer or about $0.50 USD. For longer trips, you can negotiate a price beforehand, and get a slightly better deal than using the meter. There are also on-call taxi companies that you can call to pick you up. Although their rates may be slightly higher than the taxis that you flag down on the street, you can rest assured that they are safe, reliable, and fairly priced. COLECTIVO A 'taxi colectivo' is a sedan car that does a fixed route and takes passenger within it for a standard fee. This type of transportation is legal and follow regulations, belong to a route, are black and always have a sign on top with fees visible. It’s kind of like taking a bus with the comfort of a cab. For short trips, they can be a great way to save money. Almost every Chilean city has colectivos, however, they are more popular outside Santiago and even more in small towns. Several small towns don’t have a bus service so locals rely on colectivos. Colectivos are inherently urban services unlike many other small private services you see in other parts of the world but there’s a variant of colectivos that you won’t get to see much in Santiago which is the yellow colectivo and these do rural routes. PAGE | 12 METRO SYSTEM Santiago Metro or what is locally known as Metro de Santiago is the underground rapid transit system operating in Santiago, Chile's largest city. This is the second largest metro system in Latin America next to Mexico City metro. The complete system is highly sophisticated and is built using the latest technology. This is a convenient way to get around the city, but it is priced slightly higher compared to busses. A single trip ticket costs between 520 and 620 Chilean Pesos, depending on whether you are traveling during peak times or off-peak times. At present, Santiago Metro operates through 5 lines which connect altogether 108 stations. The complete route length is 103 km and it is operated by a state undertaking company Metro S.A. There are around 2.4 million people who use the metro system on a daily average. There's Torres del Paine National Park and Moon Valley Amphitheater to name a few Torres del Paine Spanning over 240,000 hectares and averaging over 150,000 annual visitors, Torres del Paine National Park is among the largest and most visited of the Chilean National Parks. Torres del Paine National Park’s most distinctive features are the three granite peaks of the Paine Massif, which rises 9,350 feet above sea level. The surrounding valleys, rivers, and lakes provide the scenic foreground, but these “Towers of Blue” (for which the park is named) are Patagonia’s most majestic natural wonder. Every turn reveals a kind of beauty that is hard to process and a visceral fear of the jagged peaks above. Prior to the late 1800s, this hostile environment was solely inhabited by the native fauna of the region, including guanacos, pumas and condors, and the indigenous tribes that braved the harsh weather. Moon Valley With its parched desert plains and wind-sculpted topography, it’s easy to see how Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna) earned its name. The sharp sandstone peaks, glittering salt deposits, and crater-like depressions make for some dramatic photographs, and watching the sunset over the valley is an unforgettable experience. Approx. 17km west of San Pedro, this natural sanctuary is one of the driest areas in the world, with parts of it not having received rainfall in hundreds of years. The lack of rain, along with the familiar wind whipping up the sand, has over the years created a sensational natural amphitheater of craggy hills stretched along the valley. As the sun went down, the colours took on new hues and the textures became even more dramatic with the falling shadows.
