Hematocrit Case Study
Tips and Instructions
I love using case studies. It is such a great way to make students really think and use
their high level thinking skills. These case studies are challenging, yet do-able.
The last sheet is just a general overview on hematocrit. It will not give them all of the
answers, but it is just a good overview of the topic. You may not find it necessary to even
give them this page if you have covered all the material. The main information they need to
complete the case studies are the formula for calculating hematocrit and the normal value
charts.
I allow my students to work together on these case studies, but there are times that
they work independently as well. Unless you have covered the topics fully, it would be helpful
to allow them to use the internet to find some additional information (like what the values are
for anemia, or what kind of drug “Epogen” is). If they don’t have access to the internet, you
could allow them to ask you questions. I had to do that once when the internet in the school
went down. It was actually a great way to guage their general understanding as well.
It is pretty rare for students to answer every question perfectly correct, but this is a
great way to incite good classroom discussion as well as extensions on learning.
I hope you and your students enjoy this activity! Please let me know if you need any
additional information or notice any typos or errors!
