COURSE: Information Systems for Management – MGMT 641
Objective
The basic objective of the assignment is to make students be cognizant of enterprises’
information systems, the business services/processes supported by the systems, and the
managerial implications they have brought.
Brief Assignment Guideline
I. Assess the information system of the company of your choice (e.g. Registrar System,
Inventory Control System, Financial Information System, Core Banking System, Human
Resource Information System, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), or Electronic
Commerce).
II. You are required to work only on one topic. Group work is not allowed. Topics and
organizations are selected by students. Assignment to an organization or a topic is based on
first come first served principle.
III. You are required to prepare a mature report. The report should contain a minimum of 10
pages and a maximum of 14 pages with 12pts font and 1.5 line spacing including the cover
page. The report should follow the following outline:
1. Introduction (1-2 pages): (4 points)
1.1 Background of the organization
1.2 Brief description of the business processes of the organization
2. Information Systems Department (ISD) Organizational Chart (2-3 pages): (6 points)
2.1 Describe briefly how the information system’s function is organized into a
departmental or divisional unit.
2.2 Indicate the Information Systems Department organizational chart.
2.3 Identify the IS professionals (Database Administrator, Security Engineers,
Programmers, Analysts etc.) who are operating under the structure.
2.4 Describe the major roles and responsibilities of these professionals.
3. The Business Information System you have chosen (2-3 pages): (6 points)
3.1 Brief description of the system
3.2 Explain how it supports business operations and decision making
4. IT Infrastructure (2-3 pages): Describe the IT infrastructure in use by the system
considering the following components: (5 points)
4.1 Data management and storage
4.1.1 Database
4.1.2 DBMS
4.2 Networking
4.2.1 Describe the network components
4.2.2 Sketch of the network model
5. Costs and Benefits (1-2 pages): Identify the costs and the benefits of the information
system. (4 points)
5.1 Costs (hardware, software, training, maintenance, downtime, etc.)
5.2 Benefits (cost reduction, time saving, profit increase, efficient customer service,
enhanced decision making etc.)
6. Management Challenges (1-2 pages): Describe challenges faced by management and
propose solutions. (3 points)
6.1 Security
6.2 Maintenance
6.3 Power supply
7. Annex (2 points)
7.1. Interview protocol
7.2. Photos including persons interviewed, items visited, etc
IV. Submit a hard copy of the report.
