Exercise 3 Post Lab Answers
1.
A) Condenser Lens- It focuses light on a specimen
B) Iris Diaphragm – Acts as the opener and closer of the condenser
C) Objective – Scans the specimen
D) Ocular- It is the magnifier
2. The order for the lenses is 1) Specimen 2) Obj lens 3) Scope 4) Ocular 5) Eye
3. When this occurs the contrast increases and the resolving power decreases.
4. It will decrease the field of view and will cover a much smaller area in higher detail as it will be
more detailed.
5. A) Magnification lets you see smaller objects more clearly.
B) Resolving Power shows the level of detail that can be observed.
C) The contrast brings the image out of the background.
7) step 1- turn off the light source
Step 2- rotate objective so that the lowest power objective is in light path
Step 3- Remove slide from the stage
Step 4- Clean the lens with lens tissue
Step 5- Fold the power cord onto itself and secure it with a rubber band
Step 6- Place the dust cover over the microscope
Step 7- put it back where it belongs
8. Making a wet mount1. place a transparent specimen or a very thin shaving over a glass microscope
2. add a drop of distilled water
3. position one end of a glass coverslip next to the specimen so that the rest of the slip is
being held at a 45 degree angle over your specimen
4. carefully lower the coverslip with a dissecting needle so you don’t trap any air
bubbles.
10. We were unaware since we could not magnify things.
