Written Works:
Written works constitute long tests, post-tests, quizzes, seatworks, assignments, or
any written activity. These will be given depending on the need and will be usually
scheduled. Questions for quizzes are usually exercise questions or applications to
practice the concepts learned but will sometimes be “objective” type. They may be
held before or after the lecture or activity, so students are held responsible to study
and be prepared. Assignments or homework are given with the intention of
encouraging self-study among students, not just to review their lecture notes but
also to pursue skills development not readily acquired during class hours or learning
time.
Performance Tasks:
Performance tasks (PT) are given or announced to students at the start of the quarter.
Ample time and appropriate scaffold tasks are given so that students can prepare
well.
Quarterly Assessment:
There are two major exams for quarterly assessment: Midterm and Final. Delayed
exam will be given within one week after the scheduled examination. There will
be no removal examinations.
Reading Assignments:
Students are expected to read all required material (s) given by the teachers.
One must refer to the topics in the course outline.

Course Outline
Non-regular Activity:
During the cautious return to on-campus learning and depending on the
availability of facilities some class periods may be spent in the Audio-Visual Room
for other instructional modes like video-showing, PowerPoint presentations or
multi-media activities.
Study/Activity group and Activity Partner:
During the class orientation on the first day, study/activity group and partner are
created. This is created to allow students to interact with each other through group
activities or activity with a partner.
Class Decorum:
For virtual classes, students are expected to observe netiquette. Taking down
notes is an integrated function of every student as well as studying and
participating in class. For students who can’t join the virtual classes, they will have

Welcome to English 103: Contemporary Arts in the Region
This course aims to engage you in appreciation and critical analysis of the Contemporary
Philippine Arts from the region. As the course title suggests, this subject consists of three
components: Contemporary arts, Philippine context, tradition, and culture, and Arts created by
artists from the regions in the Philippines. Ultimately, you will be required to produce and create
a “45 minute to one-hour show that would celebrate the different talents of the class” as
your Performance Task. This means that along the way, you need to acquire or improve your skills
on critical and creative thinking through various lessons and activities that are in these learning
packets. We hope that you will maintain a positive attitude to not only successfully pass the
subject but also to make the best out of what this subject can offer.
Best of luck!

EXERCISE 1: ART OR NOT?
As an Atenean, you have been told to appreciate everything that surrounds us. You have
been taught to observe our environment and see how the creator has made things beautiful.
While these things are taught to you in the past. Let us explore the efforts that man has done to
make our home more beautiful. Turn your modules to the Photo Gallery found at the last part
of the module. You can find pictures of objects man has done. Identify if that object is an art or
not and justify why or why not on the space provided.

definition of what is and what should be. At the end of the lesson, you are expected to
be able to identify the nature and principles of art. At the same time, you will be able to
create a concept on the principles of art. You will also be able to classify different
traditional art forms present in the Philippines. Lastly, hopefully, you will create a
statement as to why art is relevant to humans. Before dwelling into these things, fill in

EXPERIENCE
Nature and Principles of Art
Let us now dive into the definition of art and the principles that surround it.
WHAT IS ART?
According to Fernandez (2009), when one
tries to investigate the nature of man, one
will discover that as social beings it is
essential to communicate our needs, desires,
and ideals. However, communication is not
limited to writing letters or conversations.
Also, sometimes
communicating in these
mediums is not enough. This is what art tries
to fulfill. Before discussing the specifics of
art, let us investigate its origins.
Art or ‘ars’ in Latin means skill. It implies that
there are similar qualities in the expression
and application of creative skill when
material or idea is transformed to produce
another idea or object. Therefore, it can be
anything that one can develop over a period
of time like dancing, singing, running, and
the like.
Art is a product of man’s need to express
himself. Art can be considered an elevated
form of communication. Art can transform an
idea into a product that then concretizes the
idea in mind. Art can reveal many things
about the artist and his environment whether done intentionally or not. Art will reflect
and refract the ideas that the artist has. Art is
concerned with the communication of certain ideas and feelings by means of a sensuous medium, words, and expression.
The following principles should explain the
features of art:
Man creates Art
Although the notion of “Nature is Art” may
be valid and true when one considers that
God or the Prime mover created nature.
However, in the course of our subject, we will
uphold the principle that man creates art and
nature is our source of art. An example of this
would use soil as a material in his painting or
when an artist uses bamboo shoots in his
stage design.
Art exists with Man
In connection to the first principle of art, as
long as man exists there will always be art
since the creator of the art is a man. When a
man responds to his environment and when
he communicates his intentions, art will exist.
Art imitates
Art represents nature or mimesis as the
Greeks call this phenomenon in art. It mirrors
reality just like how artists create imitations of
landscapes or recreate an image of a child
begging in the streets.
24
EXPERIENCE
Art interprets
Over the course of time, artists did not limit
themselves to imitating nature or recreate
realities.
Artists have expanded their
peripheries to interpreting what they
observe in their environment. Like how Van
Gogh interprets the night in his work Starry
Night, his artwork did not necessarily imitate
what is present in the night sky. It is the
artist's prerogative to interpret nature
however he wants to.
Art expresses and communicates
Artists are transcendent beings. They are
able to see and feel what ordinary people fail
to feel and see. Their works provide deep
insights about life. Not only are they able to
provide insights but also they are able to
communicate these insights in captivating
ways.
Nature and Principles of Art
Let us go back to some of the pretest
questions you answered earlier and see if
you got them right.
Answer Key
The word “art” originated from what Latin word?
Answer: ‘ars’ in Latin, which means skill
“Man creates art and nature is our source of art”.
The following are examples of this notion, EXCEPT?
Answer: The view from the mountain top.
No art is created.
What does art represent?
Answer: Nature or mimesis. It imitates nature
and mirrors reality. Art exists with man”. The following supports the idea, EXCEPT?
Answer: Man’s art mirrors reality. It does
not justify the existence of art with man, rather
stating what it represents.
How does art mirror reality?
Answer: Recreate an imag e of a child begging in the streets.
Art processes an experience
Art affects, delights, and evokes a
reaction
Because of the skills employed by the artist,
it evokes a reaction from the viewer. Powerful
subjects are depicted with intricate skills that
viewers
are
either
delighted
or
disturbed. Now, before we proceed with the
discussion of the other principles.
Art produced is the convergence of an
artist and a viewer. However, there are
separate creative processes that an artist
and a viewer experience.
The artist ignites the experience. He
experiences creating the art himself.
Through the skills honed over time, he is
25
EXPERIENCE
able to channel his ideas through his. When
the artist is done with his work, he feels this
gratifying sense of accomplishment. The
viewer perceives the finished product. The
viewer discovers the meaning and reacts to
the artwork.
Approximately, the viewer and the artist
will experience the same euphoria. Thus,
the artist is able to translate to the viewer
his feelings or ideas.
Art processes an order
Order is defined as the natural
arrangement of things around us and it
extends to the way we think and arrange
ideas. When we consider what is an order,
one should consider the culture that the
artist is in. This will determine how an order
is perceived in his artwork. The diverse
perception of order reflects on how people
think and convey ideas. This is the primary
reason why there are artworks we do not
acknowledge because it doesn’t coincide
with how we perceive order.
Art embodies values and the most
important of these is beauty
Culture will always be reflected in the
artworks of the artist. Part of culture is the
Nature and Principles of Art
values that a community abides from. In
these values comes the concept of beauty.
Beauty is expressed by what the culture
deems “good”. It suggests balance, order,
and harmony. The artist who desires order
and harmony will abide by the values of his
culture. He will be able to connect to his
viewers having the same values. Though
these reactions may vary, this is how
aesthetics works in the processes of the artist
and the viewer. So even if the concept is
perceived to be ugly however the manner it
was presented in a pleasurable manner that
viewer will likely appreciate the artwork.
(Fernandez, 2009)
So, we are done discussing the principles.
Let us go back to some of your answers in
pretest.
Answer Key
The following are true as to why beauty is important
in art, EXCEPT?
Answer: It defines the natural arrangement
of things. Beauty is expressed by what the

and harmony. Aesthetics provide varied
reactions.
There is a similar experience between the artist and
the perceiver. Which idea is false about the notion?
Answer: The viewer and the artist will not
experience the same euphoria. They will,
because thru art the artist is able to translate to
the viewer his feeling/idea.

Nature and Principles of Art
Let us review on the different traditional artforms.
THE SEVEN TRADITIONAL ART FORMS (Lico, et al., 2018):
1. Painting
Construction
•
It is the practice of applying color or
pigment suspended on any two-dimensional
surface, such as paper, wood, or cloth. The
common medium used in paintings is oil
paint, watercolor, tempera, enamel, and
latex. Although there have been many
innovations in the medium of painting such
as coffee and soil and among others.
2. Sculpture
It is the art of creating three-dimensional
artworks. The three basic methods in
creating a sculpture:
Modeling
•
It is an additive process by which
parts of a hard substance are
cut away to reveal form. The
common medium used in
modeling is clay and wax.
Subtraction
•
It is the oldest form of sculpture
where we carve on stone or
wood.
A process of assembling parts
using adhesive materials or
welding materials.
3. Architecture
It is the art of design buildings to address a
set of design objectives. It considers
material, construction techniques, and other
instructions to be able to realize the concept
in mind.
4. Music
It is an intangible form of art produced
through sound. Music organizes the
movement of sounds produced by vibrations
of materials like voice and instruments. It is
the arrangement of sound and silence
organized based on time. These sounds are
structured and continuous. There are two
main media: vocal (human voice) and
instrumental (crafted instruments).
5. Dance
28
EXPERIENCE
Dance is a kinetic art form that uses the
body, space, and formation in order to
express a message or produce an aesthetic
condition. It is about a body in motion in a
rhythmic way, usually to music and within a
given space to express an idea or emotion,
releasing energy, or simply taking delight in
the movement itself.

6. Theatre
Processing Questions:
It is a performative art where the audience
and performers commune with each other. It
is the art of finding human experiences worth
watching for a period of time in a specified
space.
7. Cinema/Film
Cinema is an audiovisual communication
experience. It is a sequence of still
photographs shot in rapid succession in a
film strip creating an illusion of movement.
Now it’s time for you to review the rest of
your answers in pretest.
With the seven traditional artforms,
consider the following questions:

CONTEXT
Defining Contemporary Art
As you browse on your phone, you have noticed issues and concerns that deal with human
rights, politics, and the environment. As a concerned citizen, you cannot help but worry on these
issues. You might have thought about its roots and possible solutions. Right now, you will be
able to read a story of a man who has continually used his talent for his advocacy. Read the
article below and answer the comprehension questions after.
Mondares Plastic Bag Art Exhibit at Café Dua
by Press release
Café by the Ruins Dua will be opening on
July 1 with an art exhibition that fuses the
environmental advocacy campaigns and the
aesthetic concerns of artist Jet Mondares.
Entitled “New Life 2: Plastic Bag Art,” the
show will be on display at the Café until Aug.
27. Jojet Lamberto R. Mondares is a Baguio
grown educator, psychologist, and artist.
His art has evolved from an artistic
environmental campaign to an advocacy for
change. It communicates the philosophy that
despite the hardships that one endures,
change for the better is still possible.

Pic. 1 .1 Mondares Sample artwork 1
In 2007, he started an artistic response to the
call to reuse, reduce, and recycle plastic
bags that he called “plastic bag art.” Since
then, he has been sharing his art to students,
teachers, and professionals in and outside
Baguio City and encourages them to take
part in the endeavor.
His Plastic Bag Art Caravan in 2018 had been
brought to different cities and municipalities
in the country to affect change and hopefully
bring awareness to the people and the
places. Jojet’s works are
narratives on
transformation that are conveyed through art
process and form. It can be personal or his
interpretation of the changes he sees
around. Hope is often the narrative he
conveys. Inspired by the adage “the only
thing permanent in life is change,” his
materials are never taken as is. They are

Aside from being a visual artist, he also

titles include “Ang Langgam na Matapang,”
“Ang Langgam sa Pisngi ng Hari: Ang Alamat
ng Nunal,” “Si Jim-Jim Pabuhat,” and “Ang

EXPERIENCE
Defining Contemporary Art
Let us now dive into the definition of art and the Principles that surround it.
CONTEMPORARY ART
2. Historical usage
As mentioned by Lico et. Al. (2018),
contemporary art generally refers to art
being created now. It is derived from the
Latin prefix con meaning “together” or
“with”, and tempus meaning “time”. There is
no formal definition since it resists a
universal, singular, and fixed definition as it
continues to evolve. It continually questions
old hierarchies and categories of art in order
to break it. It feeds on new technologies
paving a new way of conceptualizing and
producing art.
It considers contemporary art as a specific
episode or stage in the story of the evolution
of art, referring to a specific location in space
and time. It establishes a timeline in which
works of art belong to a particular historical
period. Similar to how people identify works
in the Renaissance period or the Modern
period. However, this application is still
confusing because there is a disagreement
regarding when modern art ended.
Contemporary art is gaining much attention
that created a lot of discussions as to the
applications of the term. There are two main
applications of the term contemporary art.
1. Chronological view
It defines contemporary art related to this
current period in art history and refers to art
that is new, recent, modern, or pertains to
the present moment. However, it is
considered vague because the present era
and lifetime are relative. Artworks in the now
may not be considered new in the future.
The same is true in the artworks that were
made in the past that were considered new
in their time.
There are two views as to when
contemporary art started in art history across
the world.
Art produced after 1945
There was a shift of political, cultural, and
economic power from Europe to the United
States after World War II which ended the
European colonialism. However, this is
considered obsolete by art historians right
now.
Art produced since the 1960s
This is commonly used by art historians
because of the rise of new generation artists
who questioned or resisted the principles
that the Modernist practice has established.
35
EXPERIENCE
But historians still argue on when is cut off
date.
CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE PHILIPPINES
As a response to the social and cultural
realities during the 1970s, contemporary
art in the Philippines surface. It was the
Marcos regime during this period - an era
of repression and censorship. President
Ferdinand Marcos had a vision of cultural
and artistic renewal to the images of the
pre-colonial Philippine society which
became a justification for the enforcement
of Martial Law in the early 1970s. He
exercised control over print media and
other networks of cultural and art
institutions governed by Imelda Marcos.
They believed in there ideology of starting
a new age of development that they
commissioned an artist named Evan
Cosayo to make a rendition of the classic
myth of Si Malakas at si Maganda where
Ferdinand is depicted as Malakas and
Imelda as Maganda.
Pic. 1.4: “Si Malakas at si Maganda” by Evan Cosayo,

Defining Contemporary Art
Despite their power, this did not stop artists
from revealing the true aspirations of the
Filipino people. This started the emergence
of social realism which aimed to expose the
real situation of the Filipinos and use it to
transform the situation. Works during this
period were considered Contemporary art
because of three factors:
1. The return of democracy under the
Aquino government;
2. The improved economic and political environment in the regions;
and
3. The start of new technologies and
free access to media.
CONTEMPORARY ART AS A BREAKING
OF NORMS
Contemporary Art can be seen as a
revolution of established norms and rules.
It does not limit itself to tradition and it
does adhere to what institutions may have
established. Contemporary arts value what
is “radical” and “interdisciplinary” where
artists try to challenge established art forms
and create artworks using this new
perspective. Contemporary art sets itself
apart from the “old” and embodies the
mantra “To be new is to be modern; the
new is progressive”. As one studies
contemporary art, one would understand
that its world is plural, diverse, and
whimsical. The borders of traditional art
36
EXPERIENCE
would somehow blur because of mixed
media. Artists can now freely use any
material of a traditional art form and use it
unconventionally.
Thus,
creating
new
strategies and techniques in producing
artworks. Contemporary art does not only
appreciate the product and manipulation of
materials but it also takes its inspiration to
timely social issues in the community.
Defining Contemporary Art
Contemporary provokes human curiosity and
touches themes that disturb our thought processes. It also creates political, social, racial,
economic statements through imagemaking.
Appropriation
One important practice that has been made
in contemporary art is appropriation. It is “the
practice of creating a new work by taking a
pre-existing image or work from another
context-art, history, media, advertising and
combining the borrowed image with new
ones”.
Let’s us try to examine the artwork of
Santiago Bose’s Carnivore of Session
Road. On the artwork, Ifugao natives in
rubber shoes transport Colonel Sanders.
There is a black and white photograph of
pine trees as well as photographs of modern
buildings of Baguio to contrast the colored
image of the Ifugao Natives and Colonel
Sanders. They are also accompanied by a
headless Ronald Mcdonald. This artwork
serves as a commentary on the effects of
colonial imperialism in especially on our food
choices and clothing. It tries to present the
American influence in the rich tradition of
Cordillerans.

CONTEMPORARY
HERITAGE
ART
AS
LOCAL
Contemporary art claims awareness of
local heritage. Heritage is a tangible or
intangible object or belief that has historical or cultural value, passed down from one
generation to the next and conserved by
the next generation. Heritage is unique to
every community.
A good example would be the Old Water
Tower situated near Gaston Park in
Cagayan de Oro City. It is the oldest
surviving public structure. It was built
around 1921 to 1922 to serve as a reservoir
for water coming from Malasag Hills.
37
EXPERIENCE

made it into a city museum.

Processing Questions:
Upon reading Defining
Contemporary Art, consider the
following questions:
CONTEMPORARY ART AS A CRITIQUE TO
SOCIETY
The world is faced with various problems and
concerns. These concerns and problems are
voiced through the different platforms
available including art. With this, art is no
longer confined to galleries and exhibitions.
An example of this would be the Ukay-Ukay
Dome, a temporary architectural structure
assembled using used clothing. It was installed in Rose Garden, Burnham Park by
volunteer students. With the thriving UkayUkay or second-hand clothing businesses,
Ukay-Ukay Dome aimed to connect people
to interact to create artwork. Inside, videos
are played and sound experiments are
done.

We have been told that art is a reflection of a
time to which it was done. Art was created
with history, politics, and social norms in
mind. In this part of the lesson, we will know
how the process of producing art and the
product itself are inseparable.
CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Context refers to factors that surround a
work of art. It looks into the situation of
the artist while the art was done. This
includes historical events, economic
trends, cultural development, religious
attitudes, social norms, and other artworks
of the time.
Classification of the Context of Art
Art must be viewed as PRODUCT and
PROCESS
In order to fully grasp the artwork, one must
look into the social environment present
during that time period. Below are concepts
students must consider when appreciating
an artwork:
Society refers to social relations based on
class, gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity,
spirituality, persuasion, political commitment,
and moral norm. Culture involves how
people in society make sense of the world
around them by making meanings and
sharing these meanings with others in the
context of common.
Upon considering social relationships and
shared meanings, as a consumer of art, you
are now able to think about the cultural context of an artwork. Cultural Context examines the influences on the work of the artist
as a response to his environment.
39
EXPERIENCE
Apart from the cultural context, consumers
should also consider history. History is the
interaction between society and culture
created by people who are actively
participating in the routine of life. Once we
are able to consider this interaction, we are
now thinking about the historical context of
an artwork. Historical Context refers to a
moment or movement of history.
A lot of you might ask: when does an object
become an artwork. What makes a thing an
artwork? A thing becomes art when it is
charged with meaning and value based on
the following:
Context of Contemporary Art
The Study of Art in the Regional Context
The region is a social system that reflects
relationships between people who shared
a distinct identity, language, culture, and
tradition. The region is viewed as a key
identity marker. There is no need to
compare or benchmark artworks produced
by other communities. This is because local
tradition and pride of place are celebrated
when we study artworks produced in the
region.
Fundamental Components of Art
Below is the list of components of art:
A. Aesthetic Experience - this is a
phenomenon felt by the consumer upon
looking at the thing. This may be feelings of
enchantment, awe, fear, or anything that the
creator intended for the consumer to feel.
B. The consensus of the art world - the art
community should be able to agree that a
thing is an artwork. These include schools,
museums, professionals, and marketing
systems.
C. Cultural practice and shared meaningThe community must agree that an object is
an artwork. They must consider their own
cultural standards in considering a thing an
artwork.

EXPERIENCE
National Artists
WHAT DOES NATIONAL ARTIST MEAN
When a Filipino artist is able to excel in his
craft and contribute significantly to the
development of Philippine arts and letters,
he may be given the rank and title of
National Artist in recognition to his
achievement based on the Presidential
Proclamation No. 1001, s. 1972. Such
proclamation created the Award and
Decoration of National Artist, “to give
appropriate recognition and prestige to
Filipinos who have distinguished themselves
and made outstanding contributions to
Philippine arts and letters,” It recognizes
excellence in the fields of Literature, Dance,
Music, Theater, Film and Broadcast Arts,
Visual Arts, and Architecture or Allied Arts.
Qualified Filipino artists are awarded with
this rank and title through a Presidential
Proclamation and are given a Grand Collar
symbolizing their status. Recipients of this
Grand Collar make up the Order of National
Artists. The Order of National Artists (Orden
ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is
therefore a wearable award like a rank or title
that represents the highest national
recognition given to Filipinos who have
made distinct contributions in the field of arts
and letters. It is jointly administered by the
National Commission for Culture and the
Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the
Philippines (CCP) and is conferred by the
President
of
the
Philippines
upon
recommendation by both institutions.
The award recognizes the embodiment of the
nation’s highest ideals in aesthetic
expression and humanism through the distinct
achievement of the awardees. The Order of
National Artists may be compared to orders,
decorations, and medals of other countries
recognizing contributions to their national
culture such as, the U.S. National Medal for the
Arts, and the Order of Culture of Japan.
According to the rules of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, the
Order of
National Artists should be conferred every
three years.

Jose Maria V. Zaragoza (2014)
December 6, 1912 – November 26, 1994
In Philippine architecture history, Jose Maria
V. Zaragoza’s stature is defined by a
significant body of modern edifices that
address spiritual and secular requirements.
Modern
ecclesiastical
architecture
is
synonymous to his name. In spite of the fact
his affinity to liturgical structures, he also
greatly excelled in secular works that all
demonstrate his versality and mastery of
modernist architectural vocabulary such as
office buildings, hotels, hospitals, low-cost
and middle income housing projects, and
private residences.
In 1954, his reputation as a designer of
architecture for worship reached its pinnacle
when he designed the Santo Domingo
Church in Quezon City. Zaragoza found his
inspiration in Europe and Latin America,
unlike his contemporaries who looked
towards the United States.
In 1960, Zaragoza was invited to be among
the guest architects participating in the
massive project of designing Brasilia, the
new capital for Brazil. Through that exposure,
it added a new flair in his modern collection
that hinted towards the tropicalization of the
international style.
In his post-Brazil works, demonstrate the
remarkable use of the Brise-soleil (a device,
such as a perforated screen or louvers, for
shutting out direct or excessive sunlight) not
just a device to modulate the tropical heat
and glare but also as an expressive and
sculptural element to nullify the sterility and
anonymity of international style, in particular
the Meralco Building at Ortigas Avenue and
the Philbanking Building in the Port Area.
His work later moved towards the
biomorphic forms (are ones that while
abstract nevertheless refer to, or evoke,
living forms such as plants and the human
body) popularized by South America. These
works exploited the plasticity of concrete to
generate organic and sculptural designs.

Pic 2.3: Portrait of Ang Kiukok
Born to immigrant Chinese parents, Ang
Kiukok, in turn, witnessed the horrors of
World War 2. During this time, his family was
shoved towards the comforts of the
mountains for safety, away from the military
men of Japan. After all the chaos brought
about by war, his family fled to Cotabato,
where he mastered doing sketches from a
local commercial artist. Soon after, he
became a household name in doing
paintings for movies. He studied at the
University of Sto. Tomas (UST) here he was
taught by Victorio Edades, Diosdado
Lorenzo, Francesco Monti, and Galo
Ocampo. In 1955, he was able to bag the
Third Price at the Fifth Shell National
Students Art Competition for his artwork
Calesa. Vicente Manansala encouraged him
to hold his first one-man show exhibit at
Contemporary Arts Gallery in Manila and
became his mentor and friend. He assisted
Manansala in painting a mural commissioned
by the National Press Club. In 1959, he won a
special award from the Art Association of the
Philippines’ 12th Annual Art Exhibition for his
painting Blind Musicians.
Ang Kiukok was a Neo-realist who
developed his pictorial style into a universal
figurative expressionism. What inspired his
artworks was the beauty of the human
condition with all its deepest despair and
suffering. Pain, tension, and catharsis
transpired in his painterly system of perfect

distortion. This he successfully achieved
through deconstruction of human, animal,
and machine forms then, rebuilding them
into bizarre images of pain, torture, and
dehumanization.
He exhausted these in his works like
Cruxificion, Junkscape, Man en Fire,
Screaming
Figure,
Clowns,
Dogfight,
Rooster, Cat, making them into a multitude
of variations. Inner turmoil was Ang’s obvious
fixation. Yet, his heightened awareness of the
human imperfection and anguish elevated it
into a high point of spirituality. His Junkscape
revealed a deep aspect of life of the Tsinoy
of his generation living in the capital city,
where he witnessed industrious Chinese

and handiwork, though he never had any
formal training in fashion design. He would
do the designing, cutting, pasting, and

Ramon was a highly meticulous designer. He
was highly deemed for his ingenuity and
craftsmanship,
for
revolutionizing
the
national costume,
for
his masterful
embroidery and beadwork and for
translating
Philippine
motifs
into
contemporary fashion. He would sew a dress
to perfection without using a pattern. The
greatest of all was his manipulation by cut.
Valera was a creative innovator as he was the
Dean of Philippine Fashion.
His contributions lie in performing his
magical seminal innovations on the
Philippine terno, producing a single piece of
clothing from a four-piece ensemble (blouse,
skirt, overskirt, and long scarf). He also
constructed the butterfly sleeves which
became the terno’s defining feature, giving
them a solid, built-in, but hidden support. He
unified the components of the baro’t saya
into a single dress with exaggerated bell
sleeves, cinched at the waist, grazing the
ankle, and zipped up at the back.

Ronald Allan K. Poe (2006)
August 20, 1939 – December 14, 2004
He is hailed as the “King of Philippine
Movies” with all his names and roles.
Fernando Poe Jr., FPJ, Da King, Ronwaldo
Reyes, and D’Lanor the many names of this
man underscore his mythic status in the
Philippine culture as actor, director, writer,
producer, and politician.
In 1955, he began his career as a stuntman
for Everlasting Pictures and a double. He
soon obtained his first acting role, where
Director Mario Barri gave him his screen
name, “Fernando Poe, Jr.” to bank on his father’s name as an actor.
In 1956, he received his first big break in
Lo’Waist Gang, a movie that marked the shift
of local cinema from fantasy to realism; this
success had led him to his solo film.

68
EXPERIENCE
He expanded his repertoire when he
invested in his own companies, FPJ
Productions and D’Lanor Productions and
began to produce and direct his own films.
In many of his films, he played the people’s
hero, one who endures struggles until a
particular breaking point forces him to fight
and defeat the antagonists who seek to
oppress the poor.
In 2004, he ran as the main opposition
candidate
against
President
Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo during the presidential
elections. During the campaign, he received
overwhelming support, but eventually lost
the elections. A few months after, he suffered
a stroke and died on December 14, 2004.
He lives on as a folk hero in the eyes of the
public. His films remain classics and are
constantly being reinvented as both movies
and television shows.

Raymundo Cayabyab
May 4, 1954
At the age of 4, he began his musical
education with piano lessons. He initially
took up Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration in the University of the
Philippines, Diliman. Senator Salvador Laurel
noticed his exceptional talent on playing the
piano. Laurel offered him a scholarship to
enable him to pursue an education in music.
He graduated from the UP College of Music
earning a Bachelor of Music, Major in Theory
degree. Eventually, he became a full-time
professor
for
the
Department
of
Composition and Music Theory in the UP
Diliman for almost two decades.
He became the first recipient of the Antonio
C. Barreiro Achievement Award on May 4,
1996 for significant and lasting contributions
to the growth and development of Filipino
music. Likewise, on June 18, 1996, Awit
Awards, the recording industry awards,
awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award
for "invaluable contribution and outstanding
achievements in the promotion and
development of Filipino music." The
University of the Philippines Alumni
Association has conferred upon him the
Professional Award in music for the year
1998. In 2012, he won the prestigious MYX
Magna Award in the Myx Music Awards 2012
for his achievements in music and in the
OPM industry.

Pic 2.8: Portrait of Ryan Cayabyab
In 2018, he was proclaimed National Artist of
the Philippines for his contribution to Filipino
music and in September 2019, the Ramon
Magsaysay Award was presented to him –
the only Filipino among the honorees in
2019 – recognizing him for "showing us all
that music can indeed instill pride and joy,
and unify people across the many barriers
that divide them."
He is known as Mr. C. He is the most
accomplished composer, arranger, and
musical director in the Philippine music
industry since this bloomed beginning
1970s. His learned, skillful, and versatile
musical style spans a wide range of genres:
from conservatory or art compositions such
as concert religious music, symphonic work,
art song, opera, and concerto to mainstream
popular idioms in the music industry and in
live
contemporary
multimedia
shows
(musical theater, dance, and film). Being very
visible in the national media (once a TV host
of a long-running arts and culture series and
recently a judge in reality TV singing
competitions), Cayabyab is a household
name.
His compositions reflect a perspective of music that extols the high spirits of life and human happiness, thus capturing the very essence of our Filipino soul.

EXPERIENCE
Arts from the Region
Now, let’s identify arts from the region. But first…
What is Philippine about Philippine Art
By LEO BENESA
What makes Philippine Art Filipino? To what
extent is Philippine art derivative of Western
art? Is there anything “Filipino” about, for
example, the Manila Wyeth school, the
so-called magic realists? How about the
paintings of Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos
Francisco and Hemando R. Ocampo, all of
whom have been identified in a big way with
the native sensibility?
The questions above are merely a rephrasing
of the old problem of national identity in the
visual or plastic arts. Admittedly, the issue is
not as hot as it used to be, say, in the 1950s
and 1960s. But it is a question that will always
haunt art watchers hereabouts, and which
usually surfaces in art forums.
Genre used to be a major consideration in
determining the “Filipino-ness” of a work of
art at least in painting. The idea was that the
depiction of scenes of everyday life and the
surroundings without idealizing them was
closest in spirit to the Filipino soul and native
soil. (What saves the local magic realists from
being completely derivative is their sense of
genre.)
Thus, the pastoral or rural paintings of
Amorsolo for a long time were considered to
be most expressive of the ethos of the race
and the predominantly agricultural
countryside. On the other hand, the Filipinoness of Francisco’s paintings inheres in his
heroic-epic feeling for history and myth.
It is true that the Angono painter also did
genre subjects, as in his paintings of
festivals and other town or poblacion
happenings. But he was most at home doing
subjects dealing with the history of the race,
as well as its prehistory redolent with the
musk of myth and legend.
Because of the abstract language or imagery
used, it is not as easy pinpointing the reason
why some critics have described Ocampo as
“the most Filipino” painter ever. We have to
shift from content to style here, to Ocampo’s
unique painterly approach which is the most
original hereabouts in spite of its surrealistic
and cubistic beginnings and underpinnings.
We know for a fact that Ocampo was no
espouser of “nationalistic” causes insofar as
art was concerned. As the lately departed
painter from Maypajo used to tell us,
whatever you are painting or sculpting, if you
are a good artist, your work will automatically
be Filipino.
Indeed Amorsolo, Francisco and Ocampo
were very Filipino in their art because they
felt strongly about what they were doing and
painted well and memorably. In other words,
insofar as the critics and historians are
concerned, the three were painters first and
bearers of messages second, or painters and
message-bearers in equal measure.
81
EXPERIENCE
A great deal of the confusion in cultural
identity stems from the fact that Philippine art
belongs to the western tradition in its use of
paint and canvas and other materials, as well
as in such influences as impressionism,
expressionism, surrealism, cubism, pop,
minimalism and so on.
The fact is that all the modern art
movements in the ASEAN region were
inspired by Western models. Indonesia’s
pioneering
contemporary
painters,
Sudjojono and Affandi (the equivalents of
our Edades and Ocampo), used easel and
canvas and are no less Indonesian thereby.
Malaysia’s Mohidin and Thailand’s Srisouta
are also west-oriented, but they have not lost
their Asian, and national identities because
of it.
How about our expatriates? Can the
Spoliarium, executed by Juan Luna while in
Europe, be considered a Filipino painting? Is
Macario Vitalis less, or no longer, Filipino,
living and painting in a village by the Breton
sea for the last 40 to 50 years? Hasn’t Bencab
become more “Filipino” living and painting
in London? Is Tabuena in San Miguel de
Allende now to be considered a Mexican
painter? Choose your wild.

THE STUDY OF ART IN THE REGIONAL
CONTEXT
“The study of art must begin in one’s locality,
in the regional sense.” The idea of homeland
is anchored within this regional location. It is
where personal and group identities are
nurtured as individual experiences are
accumulated and collective memories are
commemorated. Therefore, the region is
more than just a geographical unit, but a
social system that mirrors relations among
people bound by shared and distinct
identity, language, culture, and tradition. The
region is regarded as a key identity
marker.
The Philippines, as an archipelago, is shaped
from a mosaic of regional identities. For the
past years, regional art is relegated to a
marginal status because of its limited market.
People would often disregard the true value
of an art produced locally because of its
unpopularity.
Hence, studying and
appreciating art produced in one’s own
region and recognizing its regional context
82
EXPERIENCE
Arts from the Region
that takes into account the unique
geographical, socio-political, and cultural
circumstances that shape its contemporary
artistic expressions would bring its status to
the limelight and would become part of the
cultural mainstream. It would be needless to
compare local and regional art with those
that are produced in an urban context when
regional art is viewed with a regional lens.
When the prejudice against local and
regional art as inferior and less sophisticated
is removed, the dominance and superiority
of art produced in metropolitan centers, as in
Manila’s context, come into question.
Organization, is the legacy of physical
artifacts and intangible attributes of a group
or society that are passed on, maintained,
and
bestowed
from
generation
to
generation. Cultural heritage includes
artworks of the people in a community that
are marked significant to the improvement of
their quality of life. UNESCO classifies
heritage into two types: tangible heritage
and intangible heritage.
Regionalism in art is a celebration of local
tradition and pride of place. It recognizes
regional identities that make up the Philippines. When we study Philippine art to understand the country’s identity, we shall
begin with its regions.
Objects are important in studying human
history because they provide concrete bases
for ideas and can be validated. Preserving
them validates memories and acknowledges
the necessity of the past and of the things
that tell its story. The actuality of objects
draws people in and gives them a way to
literally touch the past, as opposed to a
reproduction or substitute. However, they
are not free from danger as places and
things are damaged by the hands of tourists,
the light required to display them, and other
risks of making an object known and
available.
Pre-test Answer Key:
What is referred to as the nation’s key identity marker?
Answer: Region
What does regionalism in art mean?
Answer: A celebration of local art
Part of our cultural heritage is our rich

Intangible Heritage
The National Commission for Culture and the
Arts
through
its
UNESCO-backed
Pinagmulan book, inventory of Philippine
intangible cultural heritage initiated the first
part of the country's intangible heritage
inventory. Intangible heritage refers to the
practices,
representations,
expressions,
knowledge, skills, as well as the instruments,
objects, artifacts, and cultural spaces
associated with the communities, groups,
and, in some cases, individuals recognized
as part of their cultural heritage. Presently,
there are 367 elements listed under the
Philippine Inventory of Intangible Cultural
Heritage (PIICH), which is under the
Philippine Registry of Cultural Property
(PRECUP). According to UNESCO, intangible
cultural heritage has five domains, namely:
oral traditions and expressions, including
language as a vehicle of the intangible
cultural heritage; performing arts; social
practices, rituals and festive events;
knowledge and practices concerning nature
and
the
universe;
and
traditional
craftsmanship.
The passing of this intangible cultural
heritage from generation to generation
involves
constant recreation within
communities and groups in response to their
environment and their interaction with nature
and their history. This, also, provides them
with a sense of identity and continuity, thus
promoting respect for cultural diversity and
human creativity.

EXPERIENCE
Art Criticism
As mentioned by Kuspit (n.d.) ,art criticism is an organized approach in studying a work of art. It
helps us understand the meaning of artworks and inspires varied and changeable
interpretations. Criticism in art not only involves understanding the medium and technique used
in creating art; it seeks to unveil the processes involved in giving meaning to the artwork, as well
as understanding the artist’s view of the world and the culture and values that mold the artist’s
consciousness and disposition.
CRITICAL THINKING AND ART APPRECIATION
The study, appreciation, and judgment of
contemporary expressions of art and their
objects involve a critical process that is
analogous, in many ways, to the creative
process that artist engage in when they
produce the work.
Art, like most things, is the product of both
hard work and a process of critical thinking
that involves questioning, exploration, trial
and error, revision, and discovery.
Critical thinking is really a matter of putting
oneself in questioning frame of mind, not
merely accepting ideas and values which
present themselves as the ultimate truth to
be followed blindly.
Our contemporary culture is dominated by
images, and all students today must learn to
see and interpret the visual world around
them.
As you interrogate what you see, as you
actively participate in the world of art – and
not just passively receiving its images
without any grain skepticism or resistance
like a television set – you become critical and
self-reflective.
Meanings are not elusive nor beyond
comprehension. Meaning in art is rarely so
simple
and
straightforward.
Hidden
meanings
must
be
decoded
and
counter- referenced to your own personal
experience accumulated during your life and
social circumstances that surround you.
Through the common themes present in our
artworks, it gives us an idea how artists
produce their art.
Art Criticism
Art Criticism is an organized approach in
studying a work of art .
ANSWER KEY:
113
EXPERIENCE
As Lico, et al, (2018) mentions, art criticism
helps us understand the full meaning of
artworks. Rather than a definitive meaning
that can be found once and for all, art
inspires interpretations that are many and
changeable.
The process of interpretation will improve
your aesthetic experience, or your personal
interaction with a work of art.
Art critics, therefore, must look closely at a
work and navigate how an artwork come to
signify what is happening – what is being
experienced by the artist and by the viewer.
There are three major groups who write
critically about art: (1)ART CRITICS, who
describe works of art and then assess their
significance; (2) ART HISTORIANS AND ACADEMICS, who primarily research about art
of the past and art of other cultures; and(3)
CURATORS, who write catalog, essays, wall
texts, and education, materials for museum
and gallery exhibit.
Philosophical Positions in Art Criticism
The meaning of an artwork is not fixed and
permanent from the moment it is made.
Most critics base their writings on a particular
theoretical and philosophical position.
1. Formalist criticism is based upon an
aesthetic assessment of artworks that gives
priority to such formal elements as line,
shape, and color, at the expense
Art Criticism
of representations elements involved with
narrative, subject matter, and symbols.
Formalism first appeared in Europe in the
early twentieth century in appreciation of
artworks from non-Western cultures the
Japanese prints and African sculptures that
were widely circulated in Europe.
2. Ideological Critics originates from the
writings of Karl Marx and deals with the
political implications of art
3. Psychoanalytic criticism believes that art
should be studied as the product of
individuals who are shaped by their social
histories. Sigmund Freud employed the first
psychoanalytic criticism when he examined
Leonardo’s homosexual tendencies and
episodes from his early childhood.
4.
Structuralism
maintains
that
to
understand a work of art, one must study the
structure of art and the complex
interrelationship of all its parts that produce
the whole.
5. Post-structuralism is a range of
reactions against structuralism, but it is not a
homogeneous set of ideas. Poststructuralists
believe that this will result not in a single
meaning to an artwork.
114
EXPERIENCE
Art Criticism
6. Feminist criticism is concerned with the
oppression of groups (especially women) in
each society, along with the oppression of
their belief systems.
Feminism advocates
equal social, political, and economic rights
for all genders (including LGBT).
ANSWER KEY:
It is a philosophical approach that is concerned with the oppression of the belief
systems. It advocates equal social, political,
and economic rights for all genders.
Post-colonial theory looks at issues of power,
economics, politics, religion, and culture and
how these elements work in relation to
colonial hegemony (western colonizers controlling the colonized).
8. Phenomenological criticism holds that
you, the perceiving subject, engage with an
artwork. Ultimately this interaction produces
in you an
intellectual and emotional
response, based on your own ideas,
personal tastes, experiences, and history.
Answer: Feminist Criticism
7. Post-colonial criticism assumes a unique
perspective on the art and politics of
colonialism, which is concerned with art
produced by those who were/are colonized.
EXERCISE 2: SAMOK ART CRITICISM

CONTEXT
Art Production
In the last topic, you learned about the essential aspects of art appreciation and art criticism, the
philosophical positions and four step process of art criticism, and integrating the four step
process in the selected contemporary artworks from the region.
Art is man-made. Man can create art out of everything that he has and out of everything in his
surroundings. With this, man can produce different artworks using the materials present in the
environment and the skills he has acquired over time. In this part of the module, you will be
learning about the common themes tackled in the artworks as well the production process.

Theme is an overall idea that carries through
a work or a series of works. The artwork
revolves around a single idea that it tries to
convey to the audience. The theme is the
intended message that the artist wants to
express in his artwork. These themes are
usually supported by motifs (repeated
elements that can have both symbolic and
structural value). Through themes, one learns
how artists address and challenges social
issues through their artwork. Below are
common themes that are tackled in
contemporary art (Lico, et al., 2018).
Cultural Connection – In visual arts, is the
creative exchange of knowledge and ideas.
It leads to the juxtaposition, hybrid styles,
innovative forms, and reinterpretation of
traditional signs and symbols. (e.g.Basaan sa

honor of Saint John the Baptist, who
cleansed and prepared the people for the
coming of Jesus Christ.

Dreams and Visions – it is about ways of
seeing arts. It is not always representing the
world as it exists in real life, it can sometimes
allow us to see more than our eyes can see. It
presents imaginary visions to represent the
artists abstract expressionism. (e.g. RPG
Metanoia, 2010)
The movie portrays a simple 11-year-old kid
living a simple life transforms into a hero of
his own little world whenever he plays the
MMORPG (Massively Multi-players Online

Power – From politics to mass media, power
pervades daily life. Artists explore personal
and cultural histories, re-imagine social
space, and challenge authority, oppression,
and control. Each artist humanizes difficult
issues by acting as a witness to violence,
working to heal communities, or achieving a
balance
between
constructive

destructive
energies. (e.g El Presidente,
2012)
The movie chronicles the life of the first
Philippine President, Emilio Aguinaldo. The
story exposed the political infighting, rivalries
and dissension within the ranks that mark the
reality of what would have transpired.
Misconceptions are dispelled with, and
educated interpretations are made, in this
film. This is especially pronounced in the
film’s treatment of the Bonifacio brothers,
and Antonio Luna’s role during this era.
Portraits and identity – Throughout history
and across cultures, people have shown a
fascination with faces and in turn, with
portrait representation. The depiction of an
individual’s likeness is about identification

but more that, it is a record of an interaction

Art Production
ANSWER KEY:
It is a process of responding to
observations, concepts, emotions, and other
experiences that we encounter in the worlds
and interpreting these responses by creating
artworks .
Answer: Art Production
There are four factors affecting the
development and production of artworks
(Lico, et al., 2018):
1. Physical Appearance or form
This refers to how an artwork physically
looks like. One takes note on its shape,
size, color,
texture, and other things
that make up its appearance. Artworks
in different shapes and sizes manifest
the
available
materials
in
the
community.
They are carved of Narra wood, which
represents wealth, happiness, and wellbeing. Every step in their production
requires a ceremony, from tree
selection to arrival at the owner's house.
A consecrated bulol has been bathed in
pig's blood, had myths recited to it,
and received offerings of wine, ritual
boxes, and rice cakes.
Pic 3.7 Bulol, or “Ifugao Rice Gods” by Napoleon
2. Systems of Art Production
Because of the emergence of new art
forms, the process of production has
evolved through the years. This opened
opportunities for artist to showcase
their
artworks in unconventional
spaces like the streets or public open
spaces. If this space could provide an
artist-audience relationship, an artist
can showcase and perform in that
space.

3. Social Narratives and Histories
In the process of production, there are
existing conditions whether historical,
cultural, or political. These conditions
become narratives that help in shaping
the artwork. These conditions can
become the purpose or function in
producing the artwork.
4. Community Valuation
It is important to identify the impact
and how the community receives an
artwork because an artwork is born
out of the
community’s experience.
Although there have been efforts on
communicating the messages of the
artwork, community
valuation will
depend on the needs, rootedness on
regional life and the longevity of its
impact.
Ang Gerilya dedicated this artwork in
support of the campaign for the passage of the Freedom of Information
bill.

Script Writing and Developing a Storyline/
Program
In writing a script for a performance, the
writer must think of the following:
1. Setting
The setting should be vivid and clear
to your reader. We should know
always where the characters are, and
what period we are in, without droning
on and on with too many setting
details. Remember, less is more when it
comes
to
description
in
your
screenplay.
Art Production
2. Characters
A character is a person, animal, being,
creature, or thing in a story. Writers
use characters to perform the actions
and speak dialogue, moving the story
along a plot line. A story can have only
one character (protagonist) and still be
a complete story. This character’s
conflict may be an inner one (within
him/herself), or a conflict with
something natural, such as climbing a
mountain. Most stories have multiple
characters interacting, with one of them
as the antagonist, causing a conflict for
the protagonist.
Example:
3. Plot
In a narrative or creative writing, a plot
is the sequence of events that make up
a story, whether it was told, written,
filmed, or sung. The plot is the story,
and more specifically, how the story
develops, unfolds, and moves in time.
133
EXPERIENCE
Example: Plot Synopsis
It’s Showtime is a noontime show
with different segments. Among these
are Tawag ng Tanghalan, Mini Miss U,
Pamilyanaryo, Super Fiestars, 1TED:Now
Hiring, Mas Testing, Name It to Win It!,
Hide and Sing, Quaransing, and Walang
Tunugan.The shows starts by singing
their opening song and after that, the
different segments will follow.
Art Production
Example: (It’s Showtime!)
Vice Ganda, together with Vhong
Navarro and Jhong Hilario, went back to
the center stage to ask and entertain the
contest. Each of them started jokes and
then Vice Ganda, then asked the
contestant, “Kamusta ka na?” in which
the contest replied, “Okay lang po.”
6. Directional Instructions
4. Conflict
In literature, a conflict is a literary device
characterized by a struggle
between
two opposing forces. Conflict provides
crucial tension in any story and is used
to drive the narrative forward. It is often
used to reveal a deeper meaning in a
narrative while highlighting characters’
motivations, values, and weaknesses.
Example:: (It’s Showtime!)
Tawag ng Tanghalan Segment QuaranSing
5. Dialogue
The dialogue in a screenplay may serve
as a way to express a character's
point-of- view or to understand the
interpersonal dynamics between two or
more characters. Dialogue is also a way
to convey the story's mood or tone. In a
television comedy, much of the humor
will come from your dialogue.
Personal direction should be short, no
more than a few words, and not a
complete sentence. As such, it should
not have the first word capitalized
(unless it is a proper name), nor should
it end in a period. If the direction is long
enough to merit a complete sentence,
then it should appear as an action
element.
Example:
VICE GANDA
Maganda yung name mo, ah!
Keeping a safe distance, the contestant
laughed with the hosts of the show.
VICE GANDA
(continuing)
Ang ganda ng mga bagsakan mo kanina, ah.
Ilang araw mong ginawa ‘yan?

The shown photos are some of the examples
of what a Variety Show looks like. Variety
shows, also known as variety arts or variety
entertainment, is an entertainment made up
of a variety of acts including musical
performances, sketch comedy, magic,
acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. It is
normally introduced by a master of
ceremonies or host.
The variety format made its way from
Victorian era stage to radio and then
television. Variety shows were a staple of
English language television from the late
1940s into the 1980s.
