Cane Toads Exercise
Documentary viewable in Module. The assignment is associated with Module 4: Lecture 12 Invasive Species
1. What was the problem with the sugar cane crop in the 1930's?
The problem with the sugar cane crop in the 1930s was that it was threatened by cane grubs.
2. Where were the cane toads imported from?
The cane toads were imported from Hawaii to Australia.
3. Where do the toads lay their eggs? How many eggs can one female lay?
The toads lay their eggs in steady flowing or still water and one female can lay up to 40,000 eggs
each summer.
4. The toads eat everything, but why were they not effective against the cane grubs?
The toads ware not effective against the cane grubs because they did not eat them and rather
everything else.
5. Why are cane toads so deadly to predators?
Cane toads are deadly to predators because they have a toxic fluid under their skin and can
spew up the toxin up to a meter. These toxins can affect heart muscles hence them being
deadly.
6. What WAS that guy smoking?
The guy was smoking toad poison.
7. Name some things with which the cane toads have tried to mate.
Cane toads have tried to mate with goldfish, mud, and dead female cane toads.
8. Name some things the cane toads have tried to eat.
Some things cane toads have tried to eat are ping pong balls, small native mice, snails, insects,
cigarettes, moths, frogs, small birds, caterpillars, crabs, and practically anything that is small
enough to fit in its mouth and that moved.
9. Give several reasons why the cane toads can be so disastrous for native species. In other
words, what are the reasons why they are such successful invaders?
They are successful invaders because they reproduce quickly and can largely occupy areas, can
eat practically anything smaller than them and that moves, can live in most habitats as long as
there's water, and they have predator defense because of their poisonous skin.
10. Describe what might happen to the ecosystem where the toads invade.
An ecosystem where the toad invades will become a disaster as they toads threaten the way of
life. It is likely that dominant carnivores will vanish from the ecosystem. It can also affect human
life because these toads live in people's gardens and homes and so they can be harmful towards

children and babies that live there due to the toads' poisonous nature. Cane toads can be
disastrous for native species because they reproduce fast and occupy the area and kill the native
toads and they do not have any natural enemies.
11. Identify and describe some of the different ways in which people perceive and treat
invasive species, in relation to the rest of the environment. For example, one person
interviewed likens cane toads to an invading army, whereas another embraces them as simply
another of “God’s creatures’. Another has a novel, if quite brutal method of controlling their
numbers. Does one of these ways of understanding the relationship between people and
different aspects of the environment seem more compelling to you? Why?
Some people perceive invasive species simply as another creature existing within their
environment in which should remain on its own and not tampered with. Others may find
invasive species to be a nuisance to them and thus feel obligated to act in such a way that
eliminates them from the environment. Others may feel like it is their duty to care for them and
will be more than willing to make them feel better acquainted with their environment. Lastly,
others use them to their advantage within their environment for human needs. I believe the
method whereby we allow nature to be in full effect is most compelling to me because if we
allow these species to live in the environment, they should be left unharmed by humans and
allowed to continue on their duties. Humans should refrain from tampering with them for
human related needs and allow nature to allow things to shift/change in the environment
