I am a Person with Dignity Learning Targets • I can infer that human dignity is: the inherent quality of the human person being created in God’s image and likeness; and God’s ultimate gift to His people that empowers them to respect, love, and give service to one another. • I can recognize that every human being has dignity, regardless of social status, color, race, education, religion, and others. Who is more worthy to be respected? President or Farmer WHY? What is Dignity? “a way of appearing or behaving that suggests seriousness and selfcontrol.” What is Dignity? “the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed.” What is Dignity? It is what separates human beings from animals What is Human Dignity? • It is the belief that one is rooted in his or her creation in the image and likeness of God. Dignity of Human Human dignity emerges neither from what people accomplish or own, but because we are created in the image and likeness of God. Consequently, every person is worthy of respect simply by virtue of being a human being. Dignity of Human Being in the image of God, humans possess the dignity of person. They are not just something, but someone. They are capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession, and of freely giving themselves and entering into communion with other persons. They are called by grace to a covenant with the Creator, to offer Him a response of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead. (CCC 357) What is Human Dignity? • Each person consists of a spiritual and immortal soul, intelligence, and free will. Dignity of Human • Humans have the same gift from God. We all have intelligence and free will that makes us all equal and worthy of respect. What is Human Dignity? • The access and right to the fullness of life. Dignity of Human • Because all humans are equal, we are also called to share equality to the resources created by God to sustain us, i.e. water, food, clothing, and shelther. Implication of Human Dignity • Thus, this human dignity is a call for all to respect everyone amidst of difference in race, age, gender, religion, social status, education, culture, and tradition.
