Let Us Learn
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you learn and understand how to compare and contrast. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. Every day, you listen to
the radio, watch television, browse the internet, and even read magazines, books,
newspapers and e-books. These daily activities require a great deal of critical
reading and analysis of evaluating things and ideas.
In this module, you shall learn to look for the similarities and differences on
topics and ideas that you read, watch, and listen to using different multimodal
texts.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. define comparison, contrast, and multimodal texts;
2. determine clues or signal words that show comparison and contrast; and
3. use comparison and contrast in varied multimodal texts.
Let Us Try
Activity 1: Let’s Read!
Read this article carefully and answer the questions that follow. Write the letter of
the correct answer.
The Phantoms in the Dark
By dj
Today, social approval plays a big factor in the validation of one’s existence.
The young generation today seeks attention and approval on different social media,
thereby causing anxiety and depression. It can be observed that this has
threatened the mental strength of today’s generation. A lot of teenagers and even
young adults seek affirmation of their worth when they belong to a group or when
they are socially accepted and loved. Sadly though, this can be a manifestation of
weakness. We need to have that sense of completeness without any attachments.
We were made in the image and likeness of the blessed
One. That alone would tell us that we are enough.
What is anxiety? Anxiety is having extreme fear
and worry. It is a normal part in our life to experience
anxiety sometimes. How does this go over board? When
does it become not normal anymore? It is when anxiety is
repeatedly felt and is seemingly uncontrollable already. It
is no longer normal when one always has irrational fear
of everyday life situations. Anxiety is displaying excessive
worry over anything and almost to everything. It pushes
one to avoid certain actions, things, places, or even food
because of fear which may result to disabling the person
to empower himself to act. The person displays morbid
fear of anything which may result in panic attacks.
Oftentimes, it is a result of negative thinking or emotions. Anxiety may result to
5
having sleep problems, episodes of irritability and bouts of fatigue. There are
studies that show that social media may promote negative experiences that lead to
anxiety because of poor self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy regarding economic
status or physical attributes. One clear example is the massive propaganda about
glutathione to have flawless and white complexion. Teenagers and even adults
patronize this product in order to become beautiful to gain social approval.
On the other hand, what is depression? Depression is having the condition
of always being discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated or simply uninterested in
almost anything. The lack of interest to move and to get involved is one
manifestation of depression. Thus, the person tends to withdraw and isolate
himself from the crowd. They may either be his peers, classmates, friends and even
his family. Unlike anxiety, a person who has depression usually does not suffer
from panic or fear. Similarly, anxiety and depression also arise from negative
thinking or emotions. They both result to having sleep problems, irritation and
fatigue. Studies show that teenagers who spend a lot of time in social media
platforms have a higher rate of reported cases of depression. Again, FOMO (Fear of
Missing Out) is real among teenagers who always seek social approval to gain selfesteem.
How do we handle these phantoms in the dark? How do we stop having the fear
to be judged, criticized and embarrassed? How do we stop them from eating all our
trust and confidence to ourselves? How do we win the battle against these ghosts in
our minds?

Let Us Study
Lesson
1
Comparison and Contrast
Did you have a good time reading the article above? Now let’s try another
one. This time, you shall review your basic knowledge about one topic in
Mathematics.
Activity 2: E-Math Time!
Read this passage about Polynomials. Try to fill out the missing facts in the
Venn diagram below. Write your answers on the blank spaces.
What is a polynomial? It is an expression which consists of variables and
coefficients that involves addition, subtraction, multiplication of non-negative
integer exponents of variables. Today, we will discuss two types of polynomial: the
binomial and the trinomial. A binomial has two terms. Its highest degree is 2. On
the other hand, a trinomial has three terms. Its highest degree is 3. Similarly,
binomial and trinomial are both polynomials. Thus, they both have a constant
term.
7
COMPARISON
When do we compare?
We compare because we want to examine the similarity
between two objects or ideas. We usually use the prepositions
“to” or “with” which link two objects or ideas being compared
in the sentence.
How do we compare?
It is when we categorize or group two things or ideas to show what is similar about
their characteristics, qualities, or attributes. We use compare to when we
categorize two similar things or ideas.
What words do we use when we compare?
We use these words.
Equally
Similarly
Likewise
both
also
as well as /the same as
CONTRAST
When do we contrast?
We contrast when we want to point out the difference between
two objects or ideas.
How do we contrast?
It is when we categorize or group two things or ideas to show
the difference about their characteristics, qualities or
attributes. We use compare with when we categorize two
different things or ideas.
What words do we use when we contrast?
We use these words.
8
However
on the other hand
But
although
while
on the contrary
Let’s take a look at this comparison of an apple and an orange. Can you
point out some items where an apple and an orange are the same?
It is a fruit.
It is crispy.
Its peel is edible.
It can be made as a juice drink.
It grows on trees.
It grows in a cold climate.
It is round-shaped.
It contains potassium.
It has vitamin C.
It is a fruit.
It is tangy.
Its zest is used in some recipes.
It can be made as a juice drink.
It grows on trees.
It grows in a warm climate.
It is round-shaped.
It contains potassium.
It has vitamin C.
If I am going to compare an apple and an orange to show the things they have in
common, I will say,
“An apple and an orange are both fruits. Similarly, they are good sources of
Potassium and Vitamin C. Likewise, they can be made into good fruit juices. They
equally grow on trees.”
What words show the similarity of the two fruits?
The words: both, similarly, likewise and equally show a clear comparison of the two
things.
What do we call these words?
We call them signal words for comparison. They give us a clue that we are
comparing things.
If I am going to contrast an apple and an orange to show what is
the difference between the two, I will say,
An apple and an orange are both fruits. However, their peels have
different uses. People eat apple peels while others throw orange
peels. However, some people use orange peels in some food
recipes. On the other hand, the apple grows on a cold climate
while the orange thrives on a warm weather.”
What words show the difference between the two fruits?
We have used these words to show a clear contrast of the two things. The words
however, while, on the other hand are the signal words for contrast. They give
us a clue that we are contrasting or differentiating things.
We can compare and contrast ideas or things by using various multimodal texts.
9
What are multimodal texts? From the word multi; it means a lot. It means
having a various teaching modes like reading a book, examining brochures,
scanning newsletters, perusing a blog, watching a video or vlog, and examining an
infographic.
What is an infographic? It is a collection of graphic arts, imagery or
pictures that presents an information, knowledge or data quickly and clearly. Most
often, we can readily grasp the information when we see a lot of pictures and less
texts right?
These are samples of infographics.
