Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development
Activity
This activity focuses on a story involving the interaction of family members. Choose a story you
want to use for this activity. It can be from a story you have read or a movie or a “telenovela”
that you watched or plan to watch. Use the matrix below to relate the characters to Piaget’s
stages of cognitive development.
Title of the Story/Movie: The Incredibles
Write a brief summary of the story:
The couple has three children: Violet, who can become invisible and generate force fields, Dash,
who has superhuman speed, and Jack-Jack, a baby who has not yet discovered his powers. The
movie starts with the Parr family leading their secret life of superheroes, and each of them is
unhappy with their current situation. However, their life changes when Bob is recruited by a
mysterious woman named Mirage, to help her on a secret mission. The mission turns out to be a
trap set by the evil genius, Syndrome, who has been jealous of Mr. Incredible’s heroics and wants
to eliminate all superheroes.
Throughout the movie, we see the Parr family grow, learn and develop in their own ways, like
Helen re-learning how to be a superhero, Bob learning to be a better father, and Violet learning
to make friends and control her powers, making the film an heartfelt and exciting experience that
is both a thrilling action adventure and a heartwarming story of family.
Character Description
Father : Mr. Bob Parr
Piagetian Connection
What is his stage of cognitive development?
- Formal Operational Stage, Bob also
has a tendency to try to solve the
world's problems on his own,
refusing and actively dismissing help
from anyone, even from his loving
wife and the sage counsel of his best
friend Frozone. These flaws
combined nearly cost him his life and
the lives of his family.

- Concrete Operational Stage, While
she can sometimes be a little

She is often more authoritative with
her children than her husband Bob,
who is often too distracted to be
substantially authoritative.
Children : Violet-
What is his stage of cognitive development?
- Concrete Operational Stage, Violet :
Socially awkward, outspoken and
sarcastic, Violet plays her teenager
role to perfection all while secretly
mastering her super powers of
invisibility and creating force fields. A
Super at heart, Violet can't help her
urge to fight crime alongside her
family.
Dash-
Preoperational Stage, Dash : Is a very
outgoing boy and despite of the fact that he
has to keep his powers secret, he is still very
energetic and loves to have fun.
Sensorimotor Stage, Jack-jack : Just like a
typical baby. He laughs and giggles a lot but
cries whenever he is disturbed. Like many
infants,
Jack-Jack's
emotions
are
unpredictable; and since his powers are
stimulated by them, being with him when
the baby uses his powers becomes very
difficult when attempting to pacify or
restrain him.
