Part II. Performance Task Geckos have toe pads consisting of thin hairs called setae. The spatula on the bottom of the geckos' feet interacts with the surface through van der Waals forces. Van der Waal forces are intermolecular attractions that create temporary dipoles. Geckos’ feet, which are normally nonstick, become sticky when a small shear force is applied. By curling and uncurling their toes, geckos can alternate between sticking and unsticking from a surface, and thus easily move across it.
