CENTRE FOR DIPLOMA STUDIES UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA MASS AND ENERGY BALANCE (DAK12903) GROUP PROJECT SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2022/2023 Department of Science & Mathematics Semester: 1 Centre for Diploma Studies MASS AND ENERGY BALANCE Session: 2022/2023 DAK12903 Group Project CASE STUDY Figure 1: Process Plant Explosion There have been a lot of histories regarding the industrial accidents, often caused by poor compliance with safety rules in an often highly-competitive environment. Miscalculation of processes, poor storage conditions, locked exits and a lack of firefighting equipment are often cited as direct causes. The explosion occurred March 21, 2019, when nitrification waste that had been illegally stored by Tianjiayi Chemical spontaneously combusted, causing 78 deaths, 76 severe injuries, and 640 hospitalizations. The blast’s direct economic loss is estimated at $300 million, according to Xinhua News Agency. Whereas, the Beirut port on the other hand had blast on 4 August 2020 ripped a city to shreds and reopened old wounds for a fragile population already facing civil unrest, an ongoing socio-economic crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The blast killed more than 178 people, left more than 6,500 injured, 300,000 people homeless, and severely damaged critical health infrastructure and medical supplies. Department of Science & Mathematics Semester: 1 Centre for Diploma Studies MASS AND ENERGY BALANCE Session: 2022/2023 DAK12903 Group Project PROJECT INSTRUCTION: ❖ Based on the actual case study, students should be able to understand the problems occur in industries regarding mass and energy balance and applied the knowledge to improve the available processes. ❖ In this project, students need to design and develop a process plant that provides a good plant operation based on the input and output considerations. ❖ The instruments used in developing the process plant must not lesser than 10 equipment (eg: mixer, reactor, extractor, distillation column etc). ❖ Students may refer to any kind of sources such as books and journal articles to find the related information. ❖ Each group must propose a different types of production plant. ❖ 3 MATERIALS needed for this project which consist of: 1. PROJECT REPORT that explains all the require information regarding the developed processes and according to this criteria: (CLO 2, PLO 2) (i) Introduction (ii) Process diagram (DP 4, DK 5) (iii) Mass balance calculation (DP 3, DK 6) (iv) Process description (DP 1, DK 3) (v) Conclusion 2. POSTER that summarize the required information as follows: (CLO 2, PLO 2) (i) Brief process description (ii) Advantages and disadvantages of developed product (iii) Potential application (DP 1, DK 4) (iv) Social benefits (v) Commercialization potential 3. PRESENTATION VIDEO whereby students should prepare 10-15 minutes of video presentation regarding the overall information on the developed process plant. (CLO 3, PLO 12) ❖ Students must conduct this group project in a group of 4 members.
