Who and/or What is the Protagonist in the Movie? And Why?
I feel the protagonists in the story are the ‘Freedom Writers” because they overcame and grew so
much. Every single one of them started off with disadvantages in every aspect of their lives.
Despite this they overcame this and grew learning to care for the people around them despite
them being in a different gang or race.
Who and/or What is the Antagonist in the Movie? And Why?
4: In the movie I feel the antagonist is racism and gangs. I think it is racism and gangs because
that is what keeps everyone separated and in their groups. These groups are separated by cliques
or interests but by gangs and their race. They even believe their lives would be easier without
other people than their own and always use the key phrase “watching out for their own”.
Name Two of The Main Characters in the Movie? Why are they Main Characters?
5: Aarons was a main character because she was a main focus and her journey and fight as a
teacher. Not only did she struggle as an educator but as a person through her story. Another main
character is Eva. She struggled throughout the movie between doing what those around her
expected her to do and what she thought was right. We see her start off as someone for her
people but through growing and learning by the end she learns to stay true and do what she
thinks is right.
What do you think is the Central Conflict of the Movie? And Why?
6: I think the central conflict in the movie was the school system because of the lack of support
and resources. Aaron tried to provide the best resources and experiences for her students but was
met with resistance from the school district. Despite them having the resources and money the
did not want to give it to them so Aaron overcame this by getting two new jobs and purchasing
the same materials.
What did you like least about the Movie?
7: What I liked least about Freedom Writers was the character Margaret Campbell. I disliked her
the most because she was so rude and disrespectful. She did not care about the students and their
education. Margaret also disrespected Aaron many times and laughed in her face when she was
showing she wanted the best for her students and believed in them. Last, she was fighting Aaron
and the students every step of the way through their journey.
What did you like most about the Movie?
8. What I enjoyed most in the movie was the character development. Every single student started
off with so much hate for others that weren’t like them but as the movie continues we saw them
start to bond and realize they have so much in common. By the end of the movie they were all
family and it didn’t matter what gang or color they were.
Freedom Writers One Page Essay
To this day freedom writers is still one of my favorite movies of all time. Coming back to this
movie as a young adult really just made me appreciate and respect the message and the lessons
we learn in the movie. Hearing the stories and lives of Eva Benitez, Jamal Hill, Gloria Munez,
and the many other students in room 203 really made me realize how far we have come in
society despite the issues we still face today. Despite the students in 203 and Erin Gruwell
having totally different backgrounds and having the whole system give up on them Erin Gruwell
did not and worked tirelessly to build the bond and family between them.
In the movie we focus mainly on two main characters, Erin G. and Eva B. and their struggles.
Eva struggles with the loss of her father who was an innocent man convicted of a crime who is
now in jail. Throughout Eva's life she is taught to do whatever it takes for her people and to fight
for them. This is challenged when Eva is stuck in between doing what's right and doing what
people are telling her to. This stress causes a lot of strain on her causing her to take it out on
others like Erin. Erin is a teacher who wants the best for her students. Though she faced a lot of
resistance from the school district and board she overcame this and created a safe and welcoming
environment for her students where gangs and their race don't matter like they do on the outside.
She teaches her students that despite the obstacles they can make it through highschool and go to
college.
What I enjoyed most in the movie was the character development. Every single student
started off with so much hate for others that weren’t like them but as the movie continues we saw
them start to bond and realize they have so much in common. By the end of the movie they were
all family and it didn’t matter what gang or color they were.
In the end Erin fights for her students and is able to stay as their teacher for senior and junior
year making most of her students who thought they would drop out or not live long enough be
some of the first to even graduate high school or even go to college.
