SCIENTIFIC METHOD Steps of the scientific investigation Laura Escalante, 2022 The Scientific Method The Scientific Method is a series of steps that you can plan to answer questions and testing possible answers. Galileo Galilei is the Father of Modern Science for his description of the Scientific Method. The Scientific Method It is a procedure used to provide scientific explanations for questions about the world around us. It outlines a way a scientific can perform an experiment to collect empirical data which can be used to answer a question. The scientific plans his experiment based on background research that leads to a hypothesis predicting what may happen. When the experiment is complete, the scientific uses the data to form a conclusion. Making Observations An observation is anything detected by the senses, which include sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Making Observations Let’s say you take want to make your plants grow better and faster. You have some options that can help you out: organic soil and fertilizer. You can touch, see, and smell them. Asking a Question Observations often lead to questions. This is the problem the scientist is looking to solve. The question should be objective and testable. It should be answered with data collected by observation or testing. A testable question should not be a question about opinion. Background Research The background is the information that is already available from other experiments about the topic of your investigation. Use reliable sources. Search for the object of your question. Use books and internet. Search for the type of plant you want to grow. Is anyone else doing research on fertilizers? Forming a Hypotheses A hypothesis is a possible answer the scientific question. A hypothesis must be based on scientific knowledge, and must be logical. It should be able to prove true or false. Testing a Hypotheses A Procedure Results Conclusions
