Identify one ‘aha” moment you had when reading the articles Thinking Map – Main Concept Disproportionate numbers of African America students continues today despite the Larry P. ruling. There are no rules or guidelines to enhance school psychologists cultural awareness and sensitivity. Areas of assessment, test bias, issues with mental health, and outreach to parents have not been given enough attention. It takes action to make the change and that is required from all levels; teachers, school psychologists, parents, students, social and political networks. African American students continue to be overrepresented in special education classes due to assessment tests. There are multiple tests that are controversial regarding IQ and if school psychologists should be allowed to use them to test African American students. It’s going to take collaboration with parents, mental health providers, colleagues in education, school psychologists to end disproportionality. Changing the school finance system with help with mental health programs and will require school psychologists to work closely with board members to benefit students academic success. The overrepresentation of African American students in special education is not just a special education issue. Larry P. has positively impacted the lives of African American students but has also covered up the problem of educational racism. Lack of access equates to unequal treatment. Disproportionality is a general education issue. Tests of intelligence are an important component to the practice as long as it’s done responsibly with the goal to support students. There is a real and true achievement gap, but not due to ethnicity. Should not look at special education as bad but rather promote programs for positive education for all. Larry P. was a simplistic solution to a complex problem. The solutions created did not accomplish their goal. The focus should be on how to better serve the students. Th Larry P. ruling did not help the overrepresentation of African American students in special education. Larry P. did not solve the racially biased tests and only created a coverup for the educational racism. Disproportionate numbers continue in our education system today even after the Larry P. ruling. Overrepresentation of African Americans is in an issue within the education system. The assessment tests continue to be racially biased. The test biases and educational colleagues are the reason for injustice. Educational injustice is the reason for disproportionate numbers. The Larry P. ruling covered up the true problem of educational racism as the IQ test was not the real issue.
