Assignment 1: Make a profile of Qatar using the five themes of geography
Qatar’s absolute location is 25.3548 degrees north and 51.1839 degrees east. The relative
location of Qatar is in the Middle East, found in the Northeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula.
The country is bordered by Saudi Arabia in the southwest and the UAE in the southeast. Qatar
experiences long hot summers and temperate winters. The country also has little annual rainfall.
Qatar’s landform is a flat low-lying desert. The total population of Qatar is 13% Arab, 24%
Indian, 16% Nepali, 11% Filipino and 5% each for Bengali and Sri Lankan. The religion in Qatar
is Islam and most Qataris are Sunni Muslims, while there are some Shi’l. Qatar is in the Gulf
region, an independent emirate. Which is close to countries such as Bahrain and Oman. Qatar has
refineries that extract crude oil, which is then processed into oil where it can be used as fuel to
generate electricity for power or gasoline for vehicles. There are also a lot of new buildings
being made since the Qatar is a developing country. Pull factors to the country is there are no
taxes, meaning citizens can spend more disposable income on what they want to buy. Another
pull factor is higher income, so families are able to provide for themselves and their children,
such as the basic necessities, healthcare, education and shelter. To add on, a safer environment is
what influences immigration to Qatar, because people want to ensure their own and family’s
safety when living in an area. Although there are also push factors which may drive people away
from Qatar, one being the climate, where it may put some people at risk of a heat stroke due to
the intense summer temperatures. Another push factor may be the high penalties given to people
who do actions that go against the law.
