be civilization, particularly in China or the
Chinese civilization. Are you ready class to
know the facts about Chinese civilization
and what are those dynasties were
developed? So let us start.
D. Discussing
new
concepts
and
practicing new skills #1
So our topic for today is all about Chinese
Civilization. Civilization comes from the Latin
root civilis, meaning civil. The word
'civilization' first began appearing during the
Enlightenment. If you're familiar with the
Enlightenment, this is not surprising. The
Enlightenment was all about civilizing
humankind, using reason, education, and
science to bring people up to a high state of
human functioning. Did you know that China
is called the world's cradle of civilization?
China has the longest continuous history in
the world with over 3,500 years of written
history. It has the longest rivers, which are the
Yangtze River and the Huang He River, the
largest plateau, which is the Tibetan Plateau,
and the longest wall, which is the Great Wall
of China. From the small farming
communities,
or dynasty.
The dynasties were born such as;
Major Dynasties
1. Shang Dynasty (1766- 1122 B.C.)
This dynasty is the first official dynasty in
China. In the Shang Dynasty, China first
began to develop its formal writing system by
carving pictographic characters onto
bones, shells, and other natural objects.
These are called ‘oracle bone’ characters.
Bronze technology and the chariot were also
used in the Shang.
2. Zhou Dynasty (1122- 221 B.C.)
The Zhou coexisted with the Shang until finally
conquering it. During this dynasty, the “I
Ching,” or “Book of Changes,” was written: a
book of divination that first introduces
concepts like the famous yin-yang (阴阳
yīnyáng) symbol. Confucianism, Daoism
(Taoism), and Legalism–three ancient
Chinese philosophies–also emerged during
this dynasty.
3. Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C)
The Qin Dynasty is one of China’s shortest yet
most famous dynasties! With his powerful
armies and belief in the philosophy of
Legalism, the famous first emperor Qin
Shihuang (秦始皇 Qín Shǐhuáng) conquered
all the rival kingdoms, bringing total unity to
China. Building the Great Wall of China.
4. Han Dynasty (206 B.C – 220 A.D)
Buddhism is brought to China from India.
Trade routes to Persia and India are
established. Paper, water clocks, sundials,
silk, and seismographs were all invented
during the Han Dynasty.
5. Sui Dynasty ( 589 – 618 A.D)
After the fall of the Han Dynasty, powerful
emperors
reunite
China.
A
great
transportation network is built, including the
Grand Canal linking the Huang and chang
river. Gunpowder is invented.
6. Tang Dynasty (618- 907 A.D)
The Tang Dynasty exerted its influence up
and down the Silk Road, to Korea, and
Japan.
7. Song Dynasty ( 960- 1279 A.D)
Age of high culture; printing, poetry,
calligraphy, movable type and paper
money are developed and the compass was
also invented during this dynasty.
8. Yuan Dynasty ( 1279- 1368 A.D)
Genghis Khan leads the Mongols from the
northwest in an attack on China. His
grandson Kublai Khan founds the Yuan
dynasty. The dominance the Mongols
established across Asia led to a peaceful
period where trade flowed from east to west.
New, ideas and inventions entered China
from the Middle East: astronomy, medicine,
cartography, cotton, and new crops like
lemons and melons entered the Chinese
diet.
9. Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644 A.D.)
After the collapse of the Yuan, the Ming
Dynasty began to rule China–returning the
land to Chinese rule. The Ming Dynasty was
incredibly significant: the population of the
empire doubled, famous blue-and-white
Chinese porcelain was produced and
exported, and the Yongle Emperor (永乐
Yǒnglè) built the Forbidden City.
10. Qing Dynasty( 1644-1912 A.D)
Manchu invaders come from the north and
set up the Qing Dynasty. Foreign trade and
industry grow but nationalist uprisings bring
on final collapse.
