Chief Constant Pinesi’s older brother Simon Chimaganich
Simon Chimaganich (also spelled Tchimaganich) was a son of Grand Chief Wambolak born about 1755,
thus making him Chief Constant’s older brother. 1 Simon Chimaganich died in Oka on 25 June 1795, in
the presence of his brother Constant.2
Chimaganich was an Algonquin chief whose name appears as Chimanagiche on the written version of a
speech by Algonquin and Nipissing chiefs stating that the lands on the Ottawa River upstream of the
Long Sault (i.e. present day Carillon) “have not been sold” to the government.3
No information has been found as to where in Algonquin territory Chief Chimaganich had his hunting
grounds.
Chief Simon Chimaganich was married to Cécile Pawitikokwe. They had five sons, including Bernard
Wabonak and two daughters.
Bernard Wabonak was also an Algonquin chief, born in 1791 and died in May 1826 at Oka.4 As the son of
his elder brother, Wabonak was Chief Pinesi’s nephew. His name appears as Bernard Wabonack on an
1820 Algonquin/Nipissing petition to the government requesting acknowledgement of Algonquin
ownership of traditional lands. 5
No information has been found as to where in Algonquin territory Chief Wabonak had his hunting
grounds.
Another son of Chief Chimaganich is identified as Joseph Kobat Pepamipatotch, whose name appears in
Weskaraini.ca list of Algonquin chiefs at Oka6, but not on the weskaraini.ca entry for Simon
Chimaganich.
