methodology.
1
LO3. Analyse their system using a suitable
methodology.
 Tools used to investigate the system
 Identifying user and system requirements and constraints
 Identifying the team members, their roles and responsibilities
 Identifying documentation produced at the different stages
 Criteria to use to determine the suitability of the methodology
2
Tools to Investigate the System
 Review of Procedural Forms
 Focus groups
 Interviews
 Discovery Prototyping
 Questionnaires
 Joint requirements planning
(JRP)
 Observation
3
Review of Procedural Forms
Procedural manuals can give a good picture of the
system to be studied;
How the existing system works,
what are its assumptions,
what information flows in, and what flows out,
what dependency there is on the external system
4
Interviews
The aim of an interview is to gather information, facts and
opinions from the person being interviewed through a
series of insightful questions.
 Structured Interview
 Unstructured Interview
5
Advantages
 Allow for more in-depth data collection and
comprehensive understanding
 Body language and facial expressions are more clearly
identified and understood
 The interviewer can probe for explanations of responses
 Stimulus material and visual aids can be used to
support the interview
6
Disadvantages
 Interviews are more time consuming to recruit and
conduct
 As a result of timing and travel, interviews can be
expensive
 Interviews can deliver biased responses
7
Questionnaires
Questionnaires a re another traditional method used by
systems analysts. A questionnaire allows the subject time
to think about their answer and time to recall previous
events or thoughts.
 Open format questions
 Closed format questions
8
Advantages
 Easy to analyse
 Low cost
 Simple and quick for the respondent to complete
 Can be used for sensitive topics which users may feel
uncomfortable speaking to an interviewer about
 Anonymity can be maintained
9
Disadvantages
 Respondents may ignore certain questions
 Questions may be incorrectly completed
 Not suitable to investigate long, complex issues
 respondents may misunderstand questions because of
ambiguous language
 May require follow ups
10
Lesson Summery

 Interviews
 Questioners
