The aim of the NSS, Shivaji College chapter, is to instil a spirit of community service amongst young students. We strongly believe that our energetic and involved youth can make pathbreaking changes in alleviating the problems of society and become guiding lights, ever ready to step in and help the marginalised and oppressed. In this spirit, the NSS conducts numerous initiatives through the session, including community outreach programmes as well as the promotion of education for the underprivileged. The lockdown period and the COVID19 crisis provided fresh challenges towards continuing our endeavours of social service. The NSS stepped up successfully, shifting to online platforms to ensure the continuance of lively dialogue and debate on modern day social issues to inspire our students to contribute to society. Regardless of what difficult times we face, our strong belief is that Shivaji College shall prevail. Our path towards changing society and alleviating its problems will not diverge and through the NSS and its members, we will always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Dr. Shiv Kumar Sahdev Principal ORIENTATION DAY Celebrating the principle of 'Not me, but you', the vibrant community organized its Orientation day on 5th August in the auditorium at 10:30 am. The chief guest - Mr. Amit Maheshwari who is an award winning Global Business Trainer, Corporate Trainer, Keynote Motivational Speaker and much more. Known as 'success guru' and 'business mentor', he truly managed to soar the spirits of the students especially the freshers, through his keynote lecture. His address was very structured and interactive, in which he inspired the students as to how to chalk out an ultimate strategy for success and tackle our failures. He ended his address with a Q&A session and cleared the doubts. NSS COUNCIL 19-20 INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY CELEBRATION on June 21, Yoga Day was celebrated in the premises of Shivaji College on the occasion of International Yoga Day. The 516 cadets of NCC Girls' Wing, which come under the 7 Delhi Girls' Battalion of Shivaji College, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, Laxmibai College and, Rajdhani College, performed a spectacular display of various postures of yoga for about an hour. This program was conducted by Yoga experts from the Indian Institute of Yoga, headed by Mr. T.N. Malhotra. After the program, the experts of Indian Institute of Yoga presented a booklet of the Yoga Institute to the Principal. At the end, snacks were distributed to everyone. "Little efforts can also instill big changes." LECTURE ON IMPORTANCE OF SEGREGATION OF SOLID WASTE The volunteers attended a lecture organized by South Delhi Municipal Corporation in the auditorium of college. The aim of the the lecture was to create awareness about the process and importance of segregation of solid waste. VISIT TO RANBASERA NSS SHIVAJI organized an awareness drive in the Ranbasera on 20th August 2019. The objective of the drive was to get some insights about the level of personal hygiene that the people maintained in the community. POSTER MAKING COMPETITION NSS, Shivaji college organized a poster making competition on September 7,2019 under the Swachhta Pakhwada programme of the Government. The topic for the posters was "Say No To Plastic" iSAFE SEMINAR The volunteers of NSS Shivaji College marked their presence in the iSAFE seminar which was organized on 7th September, 2019. iSAFE'19 - Safer India Challenge is a road safety initiative run by Indian Road Safety Campaign and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways THE CAUVERY CALLING CAMPAIGN The NSS Volunteers supported the Cauvery Calling campaign and played it's part in being the change by contributing Rs. 42 for one tree. Cauvery Calling is a very first project of its kind, a campaign, which is setting the standards for revitalizing the rivers of India – the lifelines of our country. It will onset the resurrection of Cauvery river and will help in transforming the lives of 84 million people and support the farmers to plant 242 crore trees in the basin by adopting agroforestry. RALLY NSS Shivaji College organized a rally on 9th September, 2019 to urge the people to eschew plastic products, especially single-use plastics. The volunteers took out a march from the college with handmade posters in hands while raising slogans - "Plastic ko hatana hai, environment ko bachana hai". Amulya Patnaik, Commissioner of Police, Delhi. Combined practice of all participants was started from 16/09/19, 08:00AM to 10:00AM at the sports ground. NSS DAY THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF NSS NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Today, NSS completed 50 years of its establishment! NSS Shivaji College observed the golden jubilee of NSS by organising 'Slogan Writing Competition’, ‘Debate’, ‘Best out of Waste Competition’ as a part of the celebration. For the slogan writing competition, the participants had to write slogans on the topic – ‘Animal Abuse’, which was announced on the spot For ‘Best out of the waste’, the participants had to use the waste or second material and create the best out of it. As a part of the ongoing efforts to create awareness about the need to eliminate plastic, it was made mandatory that ‘single use plastic’ be a part of the waste material. In the ‘Debate’, the participants presented their arguments for and against the motion- ‘Millennial generation should not be exposed to technology’ LECTURE BY H.E WALTER J. LINDE Ambassadorial lecture series on ‘Public Diplomacy: Leaving the Cage’ by Mr. H.E Walter J. Linde. On 25th September 2019, a public lecture was given by the German Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E Walter J. Linde at the Convention Hall, Viceregal Lodge, University of Delhi. NSS Shivaji volunteers were a part of this programme. ANEMIA CHECKUP AND HEALTH TALK An Anemia detection and awareness camp was organized on 1st October at 9:00 am. Everyone availed this health checkup facility. Afterwards, a lecture was also conducted for the same in auditorium at 10:00 am. 150TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF MAHATMA GANDHI The National Service Scheme unit of Shivaji College, on 2nd October organised various events to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. These events included ‘Fit India Plog Run’, ‘Pledge against Tobacco’, ‘Shramdaan’, ‘ Solar lamp’ and ‘Old age home visit’ The NSS Unit of Shivaji College organised a workshop in the college for harnessing solar energy, in collaboration with IIT Bombay. The event has held on 2nd October. As part of the project SOULS (Solar Urja for Localisation and Sustainability), which is being organised in 101 countries, the workshop provided an excellent opportunity to the volunteers to learn making solar lamps. The ‘Fit India Plog Run’ was carried out in the morning in which the volunteers collected the litter on the roads while jogging, thus fulfilling the two goals of ‘Clean India’ and ‘Fit India’. This run is a novel method that holistically integrates the responsibilities of a citizen towards himself and the society. Afterwards, the volunteers took a pledge against the use of tobacco and other such intoxicating substances. A ‘Shramdaan drive’ to clean the college campus was organised under the ‘Swachhta hi Seva’ campaign which is a massive nationwide awareness and mobilization campaign on Swachhta. The day was concluded with a visit to Sai Sahara old age home. The volunteers shared some happy moments with the residents. Seeing the smiles on the faces of these people was perhaps one of the best heartfelt moments of the day. Taking inspiration from the teaching of our Baapu, the NSS team will continue to devote their mind, body and soul in the service of the society and nation. As he taught us, we will continue to shake the world, but in a gentle way. NSS Shivaji College organised a lecture on the topic- "Medicinal Plants in Delhi”. The well being of the human society is inextricably connected with nature which has healing powers. To provide more knowledge about this aspect, a lecture was delivered by Dr. Devender Singh Meena. Date: 15 oct 2019 Venue : Auditorium Time: 10-11am NSS Shivaji College organised a lecture on the topic- “Herbal Science”. Herbal Science deals with the application of plants mainly herbs in health care and wellness sector, to serve as an alternative to the allopathy. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Rashmi Wardhan on 22nd October, 2019 in the Library Reading Room. ONLINE COMPETITIONS World Toilet Day is being observed on 19th of November every year since 2001. The theme of World Toilet Day 2019 is “LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND" . NSS Volunteers observed this day as an awareness campaign to bring into attention the importance of sanitation. The campaign aims at organizing events and spreading awareness about the need of proper sanitation and how it can be inculcated by minimal effort in daily life which can be life changing. To appreciate the vital role that men play in our lives, International Men's Day is celebrated on 19th of November every year. It was first declared in February 1992 by Thomas Oaster to raise awareness about the issues that men go through. NSS unit of the Shivaji College wishes good luck to all! NSS students of Shivaji College made their preliminary visit to the Saraswati Bal Mandir in Rajouri Garden J - Block on 11th January 2020. The school was having their own education fair. The Chief Guest was Major Harsh Kumar, secretary of NCERT, it was a magnificent moment for the volunteers and the kids to give the honored welcome to him in the way of Guest of Honor. The volunteers interacted with the students and it was like a stress busting therapy for the students. Then the NSS team gave a musical performance to school kids with songs related to success school life and mental health. NSS Shivaji College in collaboration with the NCC unit of the college celebrated the National Army Day on 15th January 2020 by organising the following events: 1. Martyr Wall Inauguration A wall paying tribute to our martyr soldiers was inaugurated in the college. The volunteers lit candles and brought flowers to pay homage to the martyrs. 2. Visit to National War Memorial Afterwards, the volunteers visited National War Memorial which stands tall as a memorial for the 83,000 soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who laid down their lives. 3. A workshop on Road Safety was also conducted in the college. VISIT TO SAHELI CAMP NSS students of Shivaji college visited camp "Saheli", an initiative of the Ladli foundation that was organized in Khyala, New Delhi on 18th January 2020. The drive aimed to create awareness about women’s personal hygiene and self protection. SEMINAR ON EMOTIONAL ENGINEERING NSS Shivaji college in collaboration with 'Brahma kumaris' organised a seminar on " Emotional Engineering-"Design your Destiny" to bring into attention the importance of stress management on 23rd January. SANITARY NAPKIN COLLECTION & DISTRIBUTION The NSS team of Shivaji College visited Ranbasera for sanitary napkin distribution on 23rd January. Lack of menstrual hygiene management is a major reason for majority of the girls skipping schools during their periods and eventually dropping out at an early age and missing out on their education. Considering the need for creating awareness among the poor, needy and illiterate section of society, a three day collection drive was held in college through which all the volunteers could make a contribution. Free Sanitary Pads were provided to the needy women of shelter home and our team spoke to them to make them more aware of the significance of sanitary pads. NATIONAL VOTERS' DAY PLEDGE NSS Shivaji College organised a Voters' Pledge taking ceremony on the occasion of National Voters' Day. National Voters' Day is celebrated in India on 25th January since 2011 to mark the foundation day of Election Commission of India (ECI), and to highlight the value of each vote. Hence an important role has been of the people of our country who reposed their faith in the institutional framework and participated actively. In the same spirit, the volunteers took the pledge to inspire the youth to participate in the electoral process and to uphold the democratic traditions of our country. NSS Shivaji College organized a 'Slogan Writing Competition’ as a part of the Swachta Pakhwada week. Topics were given on the spot. Use of external sources such as mobile phones were not allowed. Participants were requested to bring their own stationery. Only the sheets were provided. Award included certificates. CLOTH DISTRIBUTION DRIVE Someone has rightly said that, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of others”. On 12th February, 2020, NSS unit of Shivaji College organized a cloth distribution drive at a nearby Rain Basera . Volunteers took active participation in the same. We just throw away our old clothes and too because they become outdated for us! These old clothes could help somebody in need SELF- DEFENSE TRAINING EVENT "SHASHAKTI" The volunteers of NSS Shivaji college attended a self- defense training event "Shashakti" on 18 February. It was organised by the West District Delhi Police in MSI,Janakpuri. The training camp witnessed brimming participation of girls from various colleges across DU. The women representatives displayed their immense strength by breaking the burning tiles. They taught the volunteers self defense techniques and presented a skit on acid attack. “Taking an image, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality truly is.” National Service Scheme, Shivaji College organized an Online Photography Competition. Participants were required to portray a story using photographs based on the theme - 'Happiness/ Pollution around Delhi'. NSS Shivaji college in collaboration with the Art of Living foundation organised a seminar on power of "Inner potential“ on February 24. They told the volunteers about how one can change one's own life by unleashing our inner potential. This can be done by understanding one's strengths, weaknesses, becoming thoughtful and adopting a positive outlook towards life. They spoke about the necessity to develop our soft skills more than our technical skills to fulfill our future perspectives. The session helped the attendees understand to live a life with full enthusiasm and not accept the normalcy. RUSK DISTRIBUTION "ROAD SAFETY“ WORKSHOP On the 19th of February, 2020, NSS unit of Shivaji College organized a workshop on "Road Safety" in India. The workshop was conducted under the Indian Road Safety Campaign. Workshop highlighted the necessity to follow traffic rules and required precautions to avoid accidents on road. On 26th of February, 2020, NSS unit of Shivaji College organized a Street Play on *Log Kya Kahenge* in Raghubir Nagar area. The play was to address the issue of peer pressure among children and how the issue of alcoholism is increasing due to peer pressure and the problem of menstruation was also addressed. PAINTING AND POSTER MAKING COMPETITIONS "Every blood donor is a life saver" The NSS unit of Shivaji College in association with the Rotary Club of Delhi, CAMA, organized a Blood Donation Camp on 5th of March, 2020. The college' students and faculty members took active participation in this life saving job. Smoking is the biggest cause of preventable deaths, accounting for nearly 80,000 deaths each year. One in two smokers will die from a smoking-related disease. Every 15 cigarettes you smoke will cause a mutation in your body, mutations are how cancers start. If you could see the damage, you'd stop. NSS Shivaji College organized an inter college online poster making competition on account of No Smoking Day ( 11 March 2020 ). The topic for the same was - No Smoking. The last date of submission was - 14 March 2020. Having gifted with a wonderful brain , a sound body and consciousness...a human being tries to rule over everything and everyone. Respect for all creation and proper balance in life is necessary to maintain harmony. The aim of NSS unit of Shivaji College is to work for the physical, mental, emotional health of everyone, whilst ensuring the balance between all aspects of existence. With these aims, the NSS unit organizes seminars, discussions, awareness campaigns, rallies, competitions, visits to destitute homes.
