FRIDAY / OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY
First

Year C
One with Jesus, Together with Mary
B
y a providential coincidence, today we celebrate both the
Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the First Friday of October. The two observances are only apparently unrelated. A
closer look, however, reveals a very deep relationship between the
Holy Rosary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus because the sorrowful
mysteries are meditated upon especially on Friday, the day on which
Jesus suffered his terrible agony and death – events that are dramatically synthesized in his Heart, pierced with a lance and crowned with
thorns. Nor should we forget that the Sorrowful Mother was there at
the foot of the cross, intimately participating in the suffering of the
Redeemer.
As we offer this Eucharistic celebration in honor of the Sacred
Heart, let us do so with the same love that filled the hearts of Mary
Most Holy, the other pious women, and the apostle John, as they witnessed and shared in the self-offering of Jesus on the Cross.

R –A proclamation from the
Acts of the Apostles
After Jesus had been taken
up to heaven, the Apostles returned to Jerusalem from the
mount called Olivet, which is
near Jerusalem, a Sabbath
day’s journey away.
When they entered the city
they went to the upper room
where they were staying, Peter and John and James and
Andrew, Philip and Thomas,
Bartholomew and Matthew,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son
of James. All these devoted
themselves with one accord
to prayer, together with some
women, and Mary the mother
of Jesus, and his brothers.
The Word of the Lord!
All – Thanks be to God!

Gospel
Lk 1:26-38
The episode of the Annunciation is one of the most
important moments in human
history. In all humility and
generous obedience, Mary
gives her consent to be God’s
partner in the mystery of the
Incarnation, the first step in the
salvation of mankind.
P –The Lord be with you!
All –And with your spirit!
P – A proclamation from the
holy Gospel according to
Luke
All –Glory to you, O Lord!
The angel Gabriel was sent
from God to a town of Galilee
called Nazareth, to a virgin
betrothed to a man named
Joseph, of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was
Mary. And coming to her, he
said, “Hail, full of grace! The
Lord is with you.” But she was
greatly troubled at what was
said and pondered what sort
of greeting this might be. Then
the angel said to her, “Do not
be afraid, Mary, for you have
found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your
womb and bear a son, and you
shall name him Jesus. He will
be great and will be called Son
of the Most High, and the Lord
God will give him the throne
of David his father, and he will
rule over the house of Jacob
forever, and of his Kingdom
there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I have
no relations with a man?” And
the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come
upon you, and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to
be born will be called holy, the
Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also
conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for
her who was called barren; for
nothing will be impossible for
God.” Mary said, “Behold, I
am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
The Gospel of the Lord!
All –Praise to you, Lord Jesus
Christ!

Preface of the BVM II
P –The Lord be with you!
All –And with your spirit!
P –Lift up your hearts!
All –We lift them up to the
Lord!
P –Let us give thanks to the
Lord our God!
All –It is right and just!
P –It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
to praise your mighty deeds
in the exaltation of all the
Saints, and especially, as we
celebrate the memory of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, to proclaim your kindness as we
echo her thankful hymn of
praise.
For truly even to earth’s
ends you have done great
things and extended your
abundant mercy from age to
age: when you looked on the
lowliness of your handmaid,
you gave us through her the
author of our salvation, your
Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Through him the host of
Angels adores your majesty
and rejoices in your presence
for ever. May our voices, we
pray, join with theirs in one
chorus of exultant praise, as
we acclaim:
All –Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of hosts. Heaven and
earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Divine Jesus, you have said, Ć „Ask, and you shall receive;
Ć seek, and you shall find; Ć knock, and it shall be opened unto
you.‰ Ć Behold me kneeling at your feet, Ć filled with a lively faith
and confidence Ć in the promises dictated by your Sacred Heart Ć
and pronounced by your adorable lips. Ć I come to ask this favor:
(Silently mention your petitions.)
To whom can I turn if not to you Ć whose heart is the source
of all graces and merits? Ć Where should I seek if not in the treasure Ć which contains all the riches of your kindness and mercy?
Ć Where should I knock Ć if not at the door through which God
gives himself to us Ć and through which we go to God? Ć I have
recourse to you, Heart of Jesus. Ć In you I find consolation when
afflicted, Ć protection when persecuted, Ć strength when burdened
with trials, Ć and light in doubt and darkness.
Dear Jesus, I firmly believe Ć that you can grant me the grace
I implore, Ć even though it should require a miracle. Ć You have
only to will it, Ć and my prayer will be granted. Ć I admit that I am
most unworthy of your favors, Ć but this is not a reason for me
to be discouraged. Ć You are the God of mercy Ć and you will not
refuse a contrite heart. Ć Cast upon me a look of mercy, I beg of
you, Ć and your kind heart will find in my miseries and weaknesses
Ć a reason for granting my prayer.
O Sacred Heart, Ć whatever may be your decision with regard
to my request, Ć I will never stop adoring, loving, praising, and
serving you. Ć My Jesus, be pleased to accept this my act of
perfect resignation Ć to the decrees of your adorable heart Ć which
I sincerely desire may be fulfilled Ć in and by me and by all your
creatures for ever.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ć I know that there is but one thing
impossible to you: Ć to be without pity for those who are suffering or in distress. Ć Look upon me, I beg of you, dear Jesus, Ć
and grant me the grace for which I humbly implore you Ć through
the Immaculate Heart of your most sorrowful Mother. Ć You have
entrusted me to her as her child, Ć and her prayers are all-powerful
with you. Ć Amen!

Why Recite the Rosary?
L
ike all other forms of prayer, the recitation of
the Rosary is a way of opening our hearts to
God in adoration, praise, thanksgiving, offering, and petition. So, the Rosary is, (should be!) first
of all, an act of worship addressed to God.
The Rosary is a Christ-centered prayer. In fact,
the meditation on the mysteries of our salvation centers predominantly on different moments in the life of
Christ. Even when Mary seems to be the protagonist,
Jesus is always included as an essential character.
But the Rosary is also a prayer/devotion in
honor of Mary Most Holy. In fact, it is meant
a. to honor her in a special manner, and
b. to ask her intercession.
She deserves our praises because she is “full of
grace” and “most blessed of all women” because she
was chosen to be the Mother of God’s Son. As the
glorified Mother of the Redeemer, she is in the best
position to obtain for us all the graces that we need.
There are innumerable instances of graces
obtained through the recitation of the Rosary. The
most famous one is the victory of Lepanto in 1571
when the Christian fleet defeated the more powerful
Turkish fleet, a symbol of the Muslim power which
was threatening to overrun the whole of Europe. Pope
Pius V attributed that victory to the intercession of
the Blessed Virgin Mary in response to the recitation
of the Rosary which had been prayed incessantly
in those dramatic days. In gratitude for Our Lady’s
intercession, he instituted what is later to be known
as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary which is now
observed on the 7th of October.
On October 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II added a
set of five mysteries (the “Mysteries of Light”) to the
traditional fifteen Mysteries of Joy, Sorrow, and Glory.
Fruits of the Rosary
The Rosary, if recited properly meditating on
the four sets of mysteries, together with the effort to
live out their “message” in our lives, is a wonderful
means of spiritual growth.
The Rosary is also a very effective instrument
of community building. It gathers together, for a
shared prayer, the members of the family, groups of
families and neighbors, the entire parish and even
the whole nation or many nations, as it happened at
the opening of the International Marian Year.
Fr. Patrick Peyton, the founder of the famous
“Family Rosary Crusade” kept proclaiming that “The
family that prays together stays together.” This has
been verified in so innumerable instances. This is
also true of the family in a larger sense – any group
or nation. In fact, “A world at prayer is a world at
peace.” (Fr. P. Peyton)
Like a loving mother, Mary sees to it that those
who gather together to praise the Lord in union
with her and to honor her, will grow in mutual
love, solidarity, forgiveness, and cooperation. This
is one of the most tangible fruits which the recitation of the Rosary has produced in all continents.
This wonder can be experienced in our country, our
communities, our families, our personal life even
today!
