The training was basically using focus group discussions, where 3 groups of 5 participants were formed. They were mandated and given term of reference to deliberate, interact, brainstorm on the major causes, consequences and mitigation measures to avoid and reduce climate change (Global warming) especially flooding in our country. Recently flood destroyed thousands of farmlands and houses worth billions of naira, This interactions (training) will help by providing workable recommendations, in order to avoid future reoccurrences. Each group had made their presentations and later a harmonized draft was adopted as follows; CAUSES OF FLOODING Excess rainfall (Intensity and duration) Overflowing of rivers and dams Deforestation Over grazing Mining activities Wrong cultivation techniques Low infiltration of water Damages of waterways and drainages Urbanization (Building on water ways) CONSEQUENCES OF FLOODING Losses of human lives Losses of crops and livestock Reduce the incomes of the farmer thereby affects their livelihood Resulting to food insecurity Damages of properties and structures MITIGATION MEASURES OF FLOODING Afforestation Dry season farming Planting of alternative crops that can survive on the affected areas Planting of cover crops Construction of waterways, drainages, dykes Government should emphasized on early warning to prone areas Construction of more dams Relocation of affected communities prone to flooding Flood Risk Insurance Scheme Government should ban the Interlocking of public places and even the private houses.
