LEARNING EXPERIENCE 7
The Teacher as a Facilitator of Assisted Learning
Learning Experience 7 focuses on how learning is better facilitated by the guidance and assistance the
learners can receive from adults and peers around them. This is based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory in
the cognitive development of children, that is, children learn through their interactions with others using cultural
tools (e.g. language and numbers) (Woolfolk, 2007). This theory supports the significant role of teachers,
parents, other adults and peers in child's learning and development through assisted learning.
Assisted learning or guided participation in the classroom requires scaffolding. This is the support a
teacher provides "through clues, reminders, encouragement, breaking the problem down into steps, providing
an example or anything else that allows the student to grow in independence as a learner". LE 7 challenges
you to discover and identify all forms of scaffolding strategies teachers give to students for assisted learning.
This learning experience can be carried out individually or strategically by groups. Your group discussions
using your observation notes will be quite helpful in arriving at generalizations. Spend a day planning how your
group will do it. You may need several days to complete this learning experience.

7.1 EXPOSURE
Observing daily learning routine of students in school
As an individual observer, choose a class of any grade which you can observe for one full session, either
morning or afternoon. As much as possible, the class is taught by more than one teacher. With your
Cooperating Teacher's approval, be inside the classroom before the session starts.
On the first day, observe how the class schedule is carried out. Use the form given in Table 7.1 to plot the
class program.

Table 7.2 contains some forms of assisted learning practiced by teachers in the field which have been found to
be effective. Discuss and clarify with your group what each form means.

7.2 PARTICIPATION
Noting teachers' practices in providing assisted learning
You will now actually observe how teachers assist learners individually or as a group while teaching. Note
down every move the teacher does to help or assist his/her students understand an idea, solve a problem,
answer a question, perform a procedure, follow directions, etc. These are some common tasks the students
are expected to do. Use the form in Table 7.3 for this purpose. Use separate forms if you observe more than
one subject or teacher. Identify the learning task to be performed by the students and the form of assistance
given by the teacher. An example is given below:

7.3. IDENTIFICATION
Identifying the effective assisted learning practices
Gather the field notes you have completed for the class by subject area or teacher. Study the scaffolding
strategies you have written in the forms. See if you can classify them according to some forms of assisted
learning given You can identify other forms which you can write in the last row.

7.4. INTERNALIZATION
Recognizing the importance of Assisted Learning
1.
From your experience when you were a student, what other strategies have your teachers used which have
helped learners understand a complex subject matter? Can you cite a specific example?
When I was in 7th grade, I have been one of those students who have no idea about Venn
diagram is. I have always thought of it as same as other kind of diagrams that easily identify but little
did, I know it is one of the lessons in Mathematics class that is an easy one. A seventh grader myself
thought nothing but impossibly. My mind was in the middle of confusion but when Mrs. Aquino
explained the exacts instructions. We observed and follow her instructions. Until now, I am thankful to
her because I can now understand the mystery of mathematics. This is one of the strategies used by
our teacher to help us understand complex subject matter with the simple techniques.
2.
What benefits do students derive from assisted learning? How is this related to their cognitive development?
Because they helped us learn throughout the process, I am grateful to my high school
teachers. They helped us better understand the subjects at hand. Additionally, in my opinion, learners
who use assisted learning do not necessarily need to lose their minds because they are unable to
comprehend the subject. As I was growing up and learning in a classroom full of different people with
different abilities, I. For those of us who struggle to keep up with the lesson, I find assisted learning to
be quite beneficial. With assisted learning, our teacher helps us with the lesson that we were hardly
able to understand. on
3.
What about the teachers? What do they get out of using scaffolding strategies while teaching?
The teachers can convey their thoughts more easily because to the scaffolding. They can
assist students as they learn new ideas and techniques. They can assist the students in minimizing
their negative feelings and self-perceptions anytime they feel frustrated, intimidated, or discouraged
while tackling a challenging task without support and guidance. Furthermore, because teachers may
"usually divide up a learning experience, concept, or skill into distinct pieces" with scaffolding, they
need not worry about lessons that are too much to manage in one episode, especially if the student did
not understand it properly. However, the teachers must put in too much work because the topic must
be covered over the course of 3 to 4 days rather than the allocated 2 days. On the other hand, they
may keep an eye on how the learners are progressing.
4.
What have you learned from this episode?
Honestly, the first thought that came to mind was that, in this day and age, assisted learning is
similar to spoon-feeding. Or do these terms share a common root yet sound different depending on the
context? These definitely caused me to think and pause. But whether or not it's the same concept, I
believe that supported learning is crucial for a child's cognitive growth. In addition, this experience
taught me the importance of scaffolding in the teaching and learning process. I could see from these
how passionate teachers are about what they do. To successfully share their knowledge with the class,
they will stop at nothing.

7.5. DISSEMINATION
Writing a journal article on how to engage in assisted learning
You have seen how important it is to scaffold learning to enhance the cognitive development of learners. As a
future teacher, imagine how you would act as a facilitator of learning. Write a journal article on what strategies
or techniques you can provide to assist or lead your learners to carry out expected learning tasks. Specify the
subject area and the grade/year level of your learners.

__Waking up to the Reality of the World___
(Title of Article)
Grade Level: ____9________
Subject Area: Araling Panlipunan
I became aware of the diversity in a classroom after ten years of study. Even
before the class period even begins, groups of buddies’ form. Before the action even
starts, groups have already formed. Araling Panlipunan is a subject that students
group themselves into according to their comfort zones, and this is something I
always look up to. Socialization is a theme in this field as well. It describes how the
individuals interacted with one another. This might seem straightforward, but for
Araling Panlipunan, it serves as a reminder to wake up and confront the realities of
life.
There are several components that compose Araling Panlipunan, or social studies.
Geography, history, culture, and the social structure as a whole are studied. The five
components of social studies include politics, government, and economics. Students
can learn a wide range of information on social studies just through this. The
subjects and elements of Araling Panlipunan, however, are frequently covered in a
single lesson for those who are unfamiliar with the way that they are presented. The
integration of several elements into a single lesson. For instance, the topic of Asian
nations is covered in Araling Asyano, with a primary emphasis on history. However,
the geography, the society, and the economy are all discussed at various points.
Additionally, when they are in a class with other members of their group, the
conversation flows naturally. I believe that using this strategy would help my
students achieve the desired learning results. Because of this, building strong
relationships within the classroom is the fundamental yet ideal step in teaching
Araling Panlipunan. By doing so, it helps students become more aware of the
realities of the world outside of the classroom.
I firmly think that each step leads to success. Yesterday's struggle was today's
best. And if one starts with the basics, the complex topics are easier to understand.
Everything is interconnected, just as Araling Panlipunan connected the key elements
of human civilisation. Although some people might find it dull, social studies
students like us find it fascinating
