Objectives: • Today we will… – Debrief heart diagrams – POGIL: Circulatory System – Dissection • So that we can… – Trace the flow of blood through the heart. – Identify the key structures in a heart and their function. Bell Work: Please take out your heart diagram homework. Check the LABELS on your diagram: Check the COLORS on your diagram: Vessels: – Vena Cava = The vein that carries blood from the body to the heart – Pulmonary Artery = The artery that carries blood away from the heart, to the lungs – Pulmonary Veins = the veins that carry blood from the lungs back to the heart – Aorta = the artery that carries blood away from the heart, to the body Discuss: • What is the difference between an artery and a vein? (Hint: Think about the direction of blood flow.) • Are there any arteries that carry deoxygenated blood? Are there any veins that carry oxygenated blood? • What does “pulmonary” mean? Valves: 4 Valves: – Doorways that separate the different chambers – 4 valves – one leaving each chamber – Keep blood from flowing backwards POGIL: • Please complete the POGIL about the circulatory system. • You may work with your partner, but each person must write their own answers in their own words. Lab Safety Clear tables of ALL unnecessary items • – Absolutely no eating or drinking in the lab Dissection Tools: • - Only cut the specimen when IN the dissection pan (NOT in your hand) Cut away from fingers Be gentle, do not force cuts Zero tolerance policy for any inappropriate behavior during dissection Accidents: • - Notify the teacher immediately if any accidents occur (especially if you are hurt or if a tool is broken) so that I can make sure everyone stays safe! Exterior of the Heart: Interior of the Heart: Lab Clean Up: • • Place dissected hearts in the garbage Wipe tools & tray with disinfecting wipes. – – – • • Do NOT use the sink for this! Take the mat out of your tray, wipe all sides. Place dissecting mat and all tools on a clean paper towel at your table. Wipe table with disinfecting wipes. Wash hands in the sink. When you are finished, please sit at your table. Debrief: • Watch this heart dissection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JerRPgnVGs (or search for “Mr. Hayashi’s Sheep Heart” on Youtube) • This is a different way to dissect a heart – he makes 1 cut across the whole heart instead of 2 cuts into each side of the heart like we did – so you see structures from a different angle. • Can you add any information to your answers based on this video? Homework: • Worksheet to prepare for Friday quiz on the circulatory/respiratory system and the dissection of the heart. • Labs (with Heart Diagram & POGIL) due MONDAY! Slides not used Debrief Homework: The Exterior of the Heart: Structure of the Heart: • The Heart Has 4 Chambers: 1) Right Atrium – Chamber where blood enters the heart from the body 2) Right Ventricle – Chamber that pumps blood out to the lungs Structure of the Heart: • The Heart Has 4 Chambers: 3) Left Atrium – Chamber where blood enters the heart from the lungs 4) Left Ventricle – Chamber that pumps blood out to the body Structure of the Heart: 4 Valves: – Doorways that separate the different chambers – 4 valves – one leaving each chamber – Keep blood from flowing backwards Structure of the Heart: 4 Major Blood Vessels: – Vena Cava = The vein that carries blood from the body to the heart – Pulmonary Artery = The artery that carries blood away from the heart, to the lungs – Pulmonary Veins = the veins that carry blood from the lungs back to the heart – Aorta = the artery that carries blood away from the heart, to the body Structure of the Heart: • 2 Sides: Right & Left – Directions are determined as if in your own body – Separated by the septum, a thick wall down the middle What is the pathway that blood follows through the body? The Heart Needs Blood Too! Coronary Arteries – Small arteries on the outside of the heart – Supply the heart muscle itself with blood – This is what becomes blocked during a heart attack
